CorSera: Return and a renewal – Milan have their midfield leader for the future in Tonali

By Oliver Fisher -

Sandro Tonali will make his return to action tonight against Atalanta at the Gewiss Stadium having been forced to miss the season opener against Udinese due to injury.

This morning’s edition of Corriere della Sera (via MilanNews) writes how Tonali is perhaps the player – together with captain Davide Calabria – who embodies more than anyone what it means to be a Milan player given he is a boyhood fan of the club.

Last year he was one of the drivers of the Scudetto win after a summer in which he reduced his salary in order to stay. He will start alongside Ismael Bennacer against Atalanta and is ready to return to the field after missing the Udinese game due to a small muscle strain.

Last year – after a brilliant start to the campaign – Tonali’s performance at the Gewiss Stadium confirmed to everyone that he was/is a different player and ready to become a leader of Milan’s midfield.

Now, the management believe that Tonali deserves a pay rise and a contract extension. The agreement between the club and the player will be extended by one year from 2026 to 2027 and he should get a salary increase from €1.2m net per season to about €2.7m per year.
