Roma 3-1 Milan Women (3-2 agg): Rossonere knocked out in controversial fashion

By Isak Möller -

AC Milan Women suffered a tough defeat earlier today as they faced Roma in the second leg of the Coppa Italia semi-finals. Heading into the clash with a 1-0 lead on aggregate, they lost today’s game 1-3.

The game started well for Maurizio Ganz’s players as Martina Piemonte got on the scoresheet (again) after making the most of a mistake at the back. Unfortunately, Roma managed to get an equaliser a few minutes before the break.

The battle continued in the second half and there was a whole lot of controversy. Milan player Alia Guagni was down injured on the edge of the box but Roma continued to play anyway and took the lead in the 62nd minute.

Eight minutes later, a similar situation happened (but no goal) and that time, it was too much for Ganz who got himself sent off after showing his rage.

It looked like the stalemate was going to continue but then, with eight minutes added to the game, Roma managed to take the lead in the 11th added minute. The controversy became even more apparent, as such, given that there was no reason for the referee to keep play going for so long.
