Romano: Chelsea ‘convinced’ by Milan star Leao and will ‘monitor’ him during World Cup

By Isak Möller -

Rafael Leao’s future continues to make the headlines as Chelsea are following the situation with great interest. AC Milan are still pushing for the renewal but the negotiations certainly aren’t easy.

The winger was the best player in Serie A last season and he has continued to do really well this campaign. Milan, therefore, are working hard on renewing the current deal which will expire in 2024.

It’s a complicated matter as several big clubs are following the situation, including Chelsea. Speaking on his Youtube channel, Fabrizio Romano stated that the English side will have their people monitor him during the World Cup.

“During the World Cup, Chelsea will have their people in Qatar to monitor Rafa Leao. They will test him again, they’re convinced that he’s a fantastic player. Graham Potter is always speaking highly of him.

“In the final days of August, Chelsea had a verbal offer of €75m plus add-ons turned down by Milan. The Rossoneri know about Chelsea and many other clubs following Leao, so they are pushing and trying to extend the contract,” he stated.

It remains to be seen what the outcome of the renewal talks will be but it’s clear that Milan will make a big sacrifice to keep him. If Chelsea come knocking with €100m or more, though, it might be hard to say no.

  1. Hard to imagine ACM meets his demands and renews him. Sadly, yet understandable enough, it looks like we aren’t yet at the level of offering high wages.
Even if Leao gets an average World Cup, most likely a big offer from Chelsea will come this January. They like him and they risk of failing to meet PL top4 this year, therefore might want to speed up a transfer.

  2. Milan has 2 win situations: 1 is to extend his contract, and 2 is to sell him. In the Chelsea option, there is a possibility for a swap and taking the money. 100 mil sounds excellent. 75 mil plus Pulisic or Broja is fine for me also.
Milan is in a loss situation if negotiations are still on hold. Don’t forget how easily Leao terminated his contract with Sporting. So, he probably will not find him difficult to wait until January of 2024 when he can sign a pre-contract with any club and baggs a lot of money for his agent, Leao’s salary bonuses etc. Milan saved the money from Kessie,
$rumma, Romagnoli, and must do a risky job now.

1)Sell him in January, 2)swap him, 3)bench him or extend….

      1. I wouldn’t say that, Pulisic is young and of course has a lots of years ahead of him to develop to be a top player. Ziyech would do.

    1. Personally I dont think swapping is a good idea. Pulisic and Broja are DEAD average. They have that pricetag because it’s EPL and Chelsea. Neither of them are able to produce 10 goals contribution a season. And we have way TOO many Average players in the team. No need to load more.

We gotta get the money because it gives a good purchasing power while we have the best scouting network. That’s what we need mate.

  3. Don’t sell Leão, otherwise we are inviting the banter era come back to us… Start from Kaka’s selling, Milan is declining, we need to recruit Ibra, Cassano, Robinho to bounce back in Serie A “only” (but UCL we are declining start from Kaka and never recover since then).

Start from this year, we have the best chance to bounce back in UCL after 15 years with Leão and Co. Milan have a bright future with these guys. The back bone of Milan is Maignan – Theo – Tomori – Kalulu – Bennacer – Tonali – Leão for the next 5 and more years.
We will wait until next 15 years suppose Leão really does leave…. :'(

  4. I think they only open question here is whether Chelsea will offer more or less than the 75M€ they already did. Sure, there might be competition now but then again, he’s 6-12 months closer to running out of contract. That should show in the offers.

So I guess people should start getting used to the idea he will be bought for a sum close to 75M€ in the summer. If anyone is willing to pay that much.
