AC Milan were willing to pay the release clause of Nicolas Jackson before the striker moved to Chelsea, according to a report.
In June 2023, Fabrizio Romano reported that Milan were among the clubs interested in Jackson, who was coming off a season with 13 goals and 5 assists with Villarreal. In the end, however, Chelsea managed to secure his services and the Rossoneri had to look elsewhere.

On his YouTube channel last night, when speaking about Jackson’s situation, Romano recalled how Milan came close to signing him two years ago. According to the journalist, they were willing to pay the release clause and everything, but Chelsea swooped in and paid even more.
“Nicolas Jackson was close to Italian football a few years ago, before going to Chelsea. Milan had more than a few thoughts about Nicolas Jackson, they wanted to pay the release clause, then Chelsea offered a very important contract.
“Chelsea even paid more than the clause to Villarreal to reach an agreement. Milan had already thought about Jackson in the past, as such, and we will have to see which clubs will consider him now. However, for any Italian club, it is a very very very difficult operation,” he stated.
Milan are seemingly focused on other players for the attack this summer, such as Dusan Vlahovic, who has expressed a willingness to reunite with Max Allegri. He’s also a player who knows the league well, which is something that cannot be said for Jackson.
That’s a good thing to know.

One of my friends is a Chelsea fan, and he hates Jackson more than the plague.
If the clause is, say 40M, and you offer 40M, then the clause is activated and the selling club can’t say no. So it’s how much more over the clause Chelsea paid irrelevant, and also stupid, since they literally don’t have to pay a cent over the clause to activate it. What matters is how much salary they offered the player, and it’s there were they had an insurmountable advantage over Milan.
However they can offer over the clause in order to get the other club to agree to a payment structure that suits their PSR needs, like imstallments or bonuses instead of paying the release clause upfront.

You don’t have to pay anything over the clause if you can pay it all at once, but if you don’t have all the money or the transfer needs to be spread over several years because of FFP reasons, you end up paying more than the clause.
