Luka Romero has spoken of his delight to join AC Milan, revealing some more about his favoured role and his aims for the future.
The signing of Romero on a free transfer from Lazio is a piece of business that might well go under the radar, but it is also a deal with plenty of potential upside given the potential that the 18-year-old has.
He came through the academy of Real Mallorca and made his debut against Real Madrid, becoming the youngest ever debutant in La Liga history at the age of 15 years and 219 days.
A move to Lazio followed where he spent two seasons but did not get a lot of playing time, and he has moved north to Milan where he hopes for better fortunes. We analysed his profile including strengths and weaknesses in a recent piece.
Romero spoke to the reporters present at his first press conference at Milanello on Friday afternoon, with his comments relayed by MilanNews.
How has the beginning of your adventure at Milan been?
“I’m very happy to be here. This beginning is going well, also thanks to the help of my team-mates and everyone else.”
In which positions do you think you fit best?
“I play where the coach puts me. My favourite role is behind the striker, where Diaz played last year. But I like all attacking roles.”
Is the goal to stay here or go on loan?
“I think I’ll stay here, I like the environment. I can learn a lot due to the high level there is. I want to stay here, I’m fine.”
Is there a player that inspires you?
“Here I saw many good players like Ronaldinho and Kakà. I also really liked how Diaz played last year. With Sarri I learned a lot on a tactical level. Serie A is a good league.”
Why did you choose Milan?
“I was at the U20 World Cup, Milan’s offer arrived and I didn’t want to listen to anyone else. I just wanted to come to a historic club like this.”
Milan don’t have a great history with Argentine players…
“I’m here to help the team, I want to give everything.”
What are your targets?
“We want to win, the season is long, but let’s think game by game.”
Why did you choose the number 18 shirt?
“I like it as a number, it’s the day some of my family and I were born. That’s why I chose it.”
Did Pioli talk to you about Diaz? What do you think about Pulisic?
“Pioli didn’t talk to me about him. Pulisic is a great player, he will do very well. I want to learn a lot from those who play in attack.”
How were the first training sessions?
“Being here is a dream. I can learn a lot. I like that you work a lot with the ball.”
How do you experience pressure?
“I’ve never felt pressure. I like playing football. I’m not afraid or anxious to be here, I’m calm, when I have the chance I’ll give everything.”
Are there any of your team-mates that intrigue you the most?
“I want to get to know everyone. I’ve always liked Leao, he’s a great player.”
What does Pioli tell you?
“I talked a lot with Pioli. I like him because he talks to me a lot and I’m pleased about this.”
Have you spoken to anyone about Milan?
“I spoke to Romagnoli and Reina. They told me that Milan is a great club and that I will get along very well.”
kid has the fire and drive and is not afraid to take on his man, I am excited to see what he can do
This guy might surprise us
Overlooked by many, this kid could turn out to be our biggest success this transfer window. I hope we don’t send him on loan. With Pulisic being injury prone and our RW in general lacking he could get a lot of minutes as an AM or RW.
