Sacchi insists low-budget mercato is ‘better’ for Milan and explains why

By Isak Möller -

Since Elliott Management took over the club, AC Milan have made it very clear that they won’t spend outrageous amounts on transfers. Something that the former Rossoneri manager Arrigo Sacchi appreciates.

Despite spending very little, always with financial sustainability in mind, Milan managed to win the Scudetto this past season and surprised anyone. They have no intention of changing their ways, therefore, and we will see it this summer.

The Rossoneri clearly need to make some reinforcements to be able to defend the Scudetto, but they will only do it in a sustainable way. Speaking at the mercato inauguration last night (via MilanNews), Sacchi praised the strategy.

“If there isn’t a lot of money, it’s better. That way they don’t throw loads away. You have to focus on the ideas. The Milan that won the Scudetto had some not well-known players, could any of you tell me something about Kalulu before he joined them?

“Here lies the merit of Maldini and Massara who have found so many young players. You have to understand football to go and get Kalulu or Saelemaekers… This is the demonstration that skill, ideas and competence always win,” he stated.

It remains to be seen what reinforcements Milan will make this summer but it’s clear that some will arrive. Maldini and Massara have been given a rough budget to work from and they will honour that, with no exceptions. Well, a player like Paulo Dybala might be.

  1. Thank you Mr Arrigo #LegendaryCoach Sacchi; #WeAreAcMilan and we will never forget… We love you, Sir.

    #Forza❤️🖤Milan

  2. With all due respect to Sacchi, fair enough Kalulu has done a lot this past season…..But Salaemaekers…??

    1. iirc Alexis scored 5 goals and 9 assists in the last two season with Milan in all competitions.

Sure he has his bad forms and could do more to help Milan. But don’t act as if he doesn’t have any contributions. He also still young which means there’s plenty of room for improvement.

Kalulu in his first season with Milan also made a lot of mistakes. The same as Leao, Tonali, Theo, Bennacer, Calabria, or Tomori.

      1. Well said.. I would not say he had a good season, but it’s too early to say that he’s a bad player. Despite playing in attack, we can’t deny that he’s more of a wide midfielder. He is most of the time very useful tactically.
He still lacks goals and assists, but if those were the only indicators, even players like Fede Valverde would not be appreciated in Madrid.

      2. Leao was also crap for 2 years, played maybe 12% of matches seriously and dragged himself around in the rest. There is a difference in them but you have to consider he was brought as RB at the time and he came from Belgium, so he needed a season to even get to anything close to Serie A. At least Saelemakers tries and runs 100% every match, in some clubs those types of players are always fan favourites…

  3. I want to disagree but Mr Sacchi is right… We still facing FFP and we don’t want to throw money at any problems before potential players are selected for the requirement needed. Also the fact that Maldini has signed eleviates most of the anxiety. Forza Milan!

  4. Enough with Kalulu arguments. We struck gold with him, yes. But does that mean we will strike gold every time?
For every Kalulu, there is 100 Bolo-Toure, Emmanuelson, Mastour etc. Maldini is good, but we shouldnt test our luck. Besides, do we really want to mount an attack on the UCL with unproven talent?

    1. Wrong! Fode and perhaps Pellegri were the only “flop” so far. Emanuelson and Mastour was before Maldini and Massara. M&M have recruited Theo, Kalulu, Tonali, Saelemakers, Tomori and the list go on. U guys be hating for no reason. It’s just money money money with u fans

      1. What are you talking about? 😀 Tomori 30M€, Theo 22M€, etc. You can’t put Tomori and Kalulu in the same sentence. Yes, quite big money was spent on Tomori, considering he was 6th choice and not playing.

    2. Just to remind everyone about Emanuelson. He was not successful at Milan due to the formation. He was a winger/wide midfielder, but at that time Milan did not use wingers. He had to play either as mezzala or as a fullback, and neither really worked well for him.

      1. Just like Saelemakers. He is playing out of position, would be much better further back as a right-sided mid or even right back. Works hard, has some skills, just is never going to be a great attacker.

    3. Milan also struck gold with Theo, Tonali, Leao, Tomori, and Pobega.

I mean, sure there’s no guarantee we will always struck gold from unknown young players. But we don’t always struck gold with expensives players either like Higuain, Bonucci, Caldara, Paquetta, Piatek, Andre Silva, etc.

The thing is buying unknown but potential young players like Kalulu have less risk. If they don’t became good players then Milan doesn’t take a huge loss compare to buying expensive players who end up as a failure. In fact Milan can still sell these young players with higher price. Look at Hauge, Milan bought him for €4-5 million but they sold him at €14-15 million.

Milan probably gonna buy one player that have €20-30 million price tag. But don’t expect Milan gonna spend higher than those numbers for one player.

      1. Pobega is at Milan for 10 years, he also wasn’t a purchase but a developed young player. I wouldn’t call that struck gold but got 1 first team player out of 5+ generations.

  5. Hopefully this cools the comments section for a bit. All I see is money eyed fans like we didn’t just win the Scudetto with M&M being smart about money

    1. You mean when we spent 80M in a transfer window without any sales but 3.5M for Laxalt? I mean we already sold a player for 12M and it is normal for you to spend less? Ok.

  6. mila win only because of juventus bad form last year not careful they will not have that lack this time around.
