Sala hits back at ‘unpleasant’ San Donato Mayor and San Siro renovation pitch

Milan Mayor Beppe Sala has produced a spiky response to the news that AC Milan are pushing ahead with plans to build a new stadium in San Donato.

Yesterday, the San Donato Milanese City Council signed the resolution on the proposed urban planning variant for the construction of the facility. A press release confirmed the news, and after the Milan Board of Directors met two days ago to approve the purchase of new land in the area.

The Mayor of the San Donato area, Francesco Squeri, offered an official comment during a press conference held and he confirmed some of the timelines and parameters of the Rossoneri’s plans.

He has suggested that there will need to be some collaboration with the neighbouring councils and perhaps even some help from them when it comes to things like policing and transport.

However, Sala spoke to ANSA and he made it clear that he will do no more than the bare minimum because he is not a fan of the way he has gone about things.

“Judging the work of others is always something that is not good, so I don’t want to judge the work of the mayor of San Donato,” he said (via Calciomercato.com).

“He seemed to me a bit unpleasant, having said that I received him with extreme cordiality, but if he puts it that way, just don’t come and ask for help.

“On the security front we will do our part and nothing more than within our perimeter, However, it seems that the problem goes beyond our territory. Therefore they are made by San Donato.”

The Milanese edition of La Repubblica (via PianetaMilan) reported that a renovation project for San Siro will be presented on January 31st which will cost €300m and which would not force the two teams to find a new place to play during the time in which the works are ongoing.

On that, Sala added: “I consider Wednesday’s commission very important, when a project for the renovation of the Meazza will be presented.

“There will also be new elements, so I am convinced that the game is still open and that this is a very important step towards the future of the stadium.”
