Sala hits back at ‘unpleasant’ San Donato Mayor and San Siro renovation pitch

By Oliver Fisher -

Milan Mayor Beppe Sala has produced a spiky response to the news that AC Milan are pushing ahead with plans to build a new stadium in San Donato.

Yesterday, the San Donato Milanese City Council signed the resolution on the proposed urban planning variant for the construction of the facility. A press release confirmed the news, and after the Milan Board of Directors met two days ago to approve the purchase of new land in the area.

The Mayor of the San Donato area, Francesco Squeri, offered an official comment during a press conference held and he confirmed some of the timelines and parameters of the Rossoneri’s plans.

He has suggested that there will need to be some collaboration with the neighbouring councils and perhaps even some help from them when it comes to things like policing and transport.

However, Sala spoke to ANSA and he made it clear that he will do no more than the bare minimum because he is not a fan of the way he has gone about things.

“Judging the work of others is always something that is not good, so I don’t want to judge the work of the mayor of San Donato,” he said (via Calciomercato.com).

“He seemed to me a bit unpleasant, having said that I received him with extreme cordiality, but if he puts it that way, just don’t come and ask for help.

“On the security front we will do our part and nothing more than within our perimeter, However, it seems that the problem goes beyond our territory. Therefore they are made by San Donato.”

The Milanese edition of La Repubblica (via PianetaMilan) reported that a renovation project for San Siro will be presented on January 31st which will cost €300m and which would not force the two teams to find a new place to play during the time in which the works are ongoing.

On that, Sala added: “I consider Wednesday’s commission very important, when a project for the renovation of the Meazza will be presented.

“There will also be new elements, so I am convinced that the game is still open and that this is a very important step towards the future of the stadium.”

  1. Renovate the Meazza and have inter and monza share it and continue paying you rent.
Milan needs their own stadium like every big club.

  2. Buthurt politician crying becacuse a lot of cash, that comes from fans, is gonna go to some other district.. Loser.

They been milking Ac Milan long enough

  3. Milan literally got green-lit for the purchase of the land at San Donato, and Sala is STILL trying to convince them to stay? LMAO!!!

  4. LOL, shut up, Sala. You missed the boat, which now, has sailed on. The idiotic people and council members around the area of San Siro and Milano city have lost all the revenue that comes with Milan games (rent of the stadium, merchandise taxes, bars, restaurants, and hotels around the stadium). Now they are panicking and whining. I hope Inter leaves San Siro too and these idiots end up with a white elephant.

I do lament that San Siro will then become just a good memory; I like to frequent San Siro and feel emotionally tied to it, but let’s move on and have our own stadium like Juve; this will be wonderful for our coffers, resulting in more money to invest, for the good of the first team and the Primavera academy.

By the way, it’s not likely that Monza would choose to host games at San Siro. It’s too big for their fan base. They have their own nice and cozy little stadium (I’ve attended games there, too; I like the Monza stadium) that is convenient for their fans given that it is within their city limits, and the right size for their number of supporters.

If Inter also leaves, San Siro will become a ghost and will end up decaying and falling apart, which is kind of deserved Karma for the obstructionism that the City of Milano and the San Siro neighborhood have engaged in for 4-5 years, when Inter and Milan did want to renovate it and stay. Now, it’s “basta” and let’s move on.

  5. No no no Mr Sala, but truth be told he tried to help the teams, it was some factors around him that wrecked the plan, but Inter should stay in San siro, I don’t think they have the money for a stadium right now…
