Paolo Scaroni, President of AC Milan

Scaroni discusses Milan’s 2023-24 accounts and ‘maxi’ bonuses for stadium

Today, AC Milan board members met to go over the 2023/24 accounts, and after the meeting, Paolo Scaroni spoke to the media.

At present, the management are facing heavy criticism for their focus on sustainability. For Milan, the focus seems to be on the accounts side of the club, as opposed to the on-field results, which is beginning to frustrate the fans heavily.

In recent weeks, questions have been asked about whether the football club is that anymore, with some believing that the Rossoneri is closer to a business model than a sporting one, with profits being the priority.

Some argue that the decision to hire Paulo Fonseca was a prime example of the priority of the club – hiring a coach with lesser wage demands than Stefano Pioli, making the move a side step rather than a step close to being a Scudetto-winning side.

Today, Scaroni spoke about the club’s financial situation, and his words have been relayed by Milan News.

Net of any disposals, do you also expect to close this financial year in profit?

“Our goal is to close a good balance sheet. We keep a very close eye on our costs, keeping them under control is the condition for continuing to invest. A small profit or a small loss makes no difference to us.”

Maxi bonuses for managers if the stadium is built, is that true?

“No maxi bonus, it does not exist. There is no bonus of any kind on anything, neither on the stadium nor on other things. This is totally false. It doesn’t apply to me or to Giorgio Furlani. Having said that, I’m hell-bent on building the stadium. I don’t need bonuses to dedicate myself to a project that I consider essential for Milan and for Italian football. I don’t need to be motivated with bonuses.”

Cost/investment management…

“The cost for members has increased by 8 per cent. There is no specific target, by organically generating resources we invest them. Even in 24/25, the investment will increase, to which we add the cost for MIlan Futuro. As the club grows then the investment in the market grows too.”

The strategy on renewals…

“Last year we renewed 10 contracts of first-team players, I think this is the best example of the club’s strategy in retaining the most talented players.”

More on investments…

“I think I said that in the last two years we have made purchases for 100 million, net of disposals. So real cash outlay. If you made comparisons with other clubs we are among the top positions. And we are among the top positions because we have a good balance sheet: profit and investment go hand in hand, they are closely related.

“To make investments you need to have good balance sheets, if we had negative balance sheets then we could not invest in a certain way.”

  1. I think that no one should have criticism about why important is net positive balance sheet.
Back in the future with very low revenues Milan was average Italian football club.
Now with 400 million of revenue without players sales, we are among top 4 Italian clubs.
Of course, everyone would love trophy.
But always, only one club can lift Serie A trophy. It is more of a gamble than knowledge or big investment.
That’s why is crucial to have always positive balance sheet that in long run we can achieve trophies.

  2. “I think I said that in the last two years we have made purchases for 100 million, net of disposals. So real cash outlay. If you made comparisons with other clubs we are among the top positions…”

So? The acquisitions made are participate worthy. It really doesn’t matter if you throw 1 billion euros into team. Without any strategy this means nothing.

What was supposed to be a low risk high reward recruitment strategy became a 200 millions waste.

    1. These imbeciles still bragging about that shows very well that they still don’t understand where all the sporting problems come from and that they’ll continue that way as long as the brand is fine.
