Scaroni answers questions on big striker signing plus Maignan and Theo renewals

AC Milan president Paolo Scaroni has hinted that there will be the budget available to go and invest in a striker next season if the team do well in Europe.

The AC Milan Shareholders’ Meeting today approved the results for the financial year ending 30 June 2023, and the official website relay that there was a positive consolidated result of €6.1m (profit, up €72.6m compared to the financial year 2021/22).

This was achieved without the contribution of capital gains from player trading and driven by revenues of €404.5m (+€106.9m in an increase of 36% compared to the 2021-22 financial year) which is a new record in Milan’s history.

Of course this is positive news on the face of things, but fans will want to know how that impacts the on-field product including potential signings and renewals.

Scaroni answered a couple of questions during a media briefing about how things look on the playing squad front, with his answers relayed by MilanNews.

Is there a desire to extend the contracts of Maignan and Theo?

“We do not comment on the market operations of our players, but we have a common thread that we follow: the operations must be economically sustainable.

“We – in the context of economic sustainability – want to have strong players, with long-term contracts. When we approach we look at the renewals from this angle.”

Is there a chance, with these numbers, to make a big signing in attack next year?

“I hope so. Then economic results are greatly influenced by sporting results: if Milan does well in the Champions League, if they enter the Champions League next year and fight for the Scudetto… everything will be more sustainable.

“With revenues like that we could afford to look at next year’s market differently. Economic results and sporting results always go together. I hope that this continues and becomes even better than what we experienced.”

  1. Tactics used by Poli doesn’t need another striker. He doesn’t fancy twin attack. Milan attack is lame…often 1 trick pony, much depends on Leao. The last 2 big games are evident that singular attack cannot make it.
