Schira: Caldara returns as Atalanta snub €15m option – Milan’s plan outlined

By Oliver Fisher -

Atalanta have decided not to use their option to buy on Mattia Caldara and a new potential solution has emerged, according to one journalist.

Caldara joined Atalanta on an 18-month loan back in December 2020 and as part of the deal there was an option to buy in favour of La Dea, where the Italian made a name for himself before ending up at Juventus, having then moved to Milan as part of the operation that took Leonardo Bonucci the other way.

According to Nicolo Schira on Twitter, Caldara will return to Milan because Atalanta have officially decided not to use their buy-out clause set at €15m for the centre-back. Now, it seems Caldara could leave to another club on loan with option to buy, after a season in which the 27-year-old has struggled with injuries and has failed to convince the Bergamo club to keep hold of him.

    1. Yes Milan is a strange team when it comes to a player falling out of favor. It seems like no one gets another chance which only hurts the club in the end. I hope Hauge doesn’t end up in that group as well… Caldara is a good player and it can’t be ignored that Romagnoli sort of brought the level of teammates down because of his lack of confidence. Caldara can easily backup Kjaer and Tomori.

  1. Very bad signing from the beginning never really played consistently and will not play again next season best thing for him and for Milan is to let him leave on loan so he plays regularly or sell him and get cash to spend on other targets.
