Schira: Chelsea will uphold ‘promise’ made to striker who could now join Milan for free

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan have been boosted in their hopes of signing Olivier Giroud as they would be able to land him on a free transfer, a journalist has claimed.

The last few days have been frantic regarding Giroud’s situation, as he was strongly linked with a move to Milan with multiple sources claiming an agreement was in place, but then Chelsea’s official website confirmed on Friday afternoon that the Frenchman has extended his contract until 2022.

According to the latest from journalist Nicolo Schira, Chelsea have confirmed to Giroud’s agent that they will uphold their ‘promise’ to release him without a fee to a foreign club. Milan are still interested and are in talks to sign the striker, with the automatic renewal being used by Chelsea to protect against English clubs.

Giroud was asked directly about interest from Milan recently, describing them as a ‘great club’ and insisting that it was Chelsea who triggered the option on his deal.
