Schira: Milan ‘not convinced’ despite Calabria asking for same salary to renew

Davide Calabria’s contract will expire next summer and there are currently no negotiations with AC Milan. In fact, according to a journalist, the Rossoneri are hesitant about renewing their captain despite the demands being very reasonable.

Calabria was on the receiving end of quite a lot of criticism last season and as a result, Milan bought Emerson Royal from Tottenham this summer. The Brazilian came off the bench against Parma and then started against Lazio last time out, seemingly ahead of Calabria now.

However, according to Nico Schira (via Radio Rossonera), Calabria wants to renew his contract despite dropping down the pecking order. Being the captain of the team, his goal is to stay and fight for a spot in the starting XI.

“Calabria? Milan have signed Emerson Royal, so they don’t believe in their captain that much. He earns €2m per year and would accept the same amount to renew for at least another two years. The Rossoneri are not so convinced, at this time, to continue the discussion over Calabria’s renewal,” he stated.

Given that Calabria could leave for free next summer, Milan opting not to renew the contract at €2m per season would be a very strange decision. Even the deadline request of at least two years isn’t unreasonable, truth be told.

  1. Calabria might as well pack his bags. Milan have been taking active steps to move on from him. I’m guessing gonna bring in another foreign RB next summer as an alternative to Emerson and that will be the end of Calabria’s ride.

Same as Bennacer. I think both of them are done at Milan.

    1. Yes ac1899. Pack you bag italian captain calabria. We already have your replacement the great emerson royal. He is taller than.

We need new captain, lazy leao will be the logical candidate. He is the highest salary man in our team.

  2. Well this is a turnaround from reports that Cafubria was asking for some kind of hefty pay rise… what happened – Ibra sat him down to watch a lowlights reel of him getting skinned by nobodies week after week?

  3. we wont hav eanay italians left in starting xi what even was the point of buying emerson we could have bought bellanova or kayode but no they bought emerson royal who got more money thaan calabria that is horible worse than calabria more money and CALABRIA HAS BEEN IN THIS CLUB FOR 9 YEARS AND OUR CLUB CAPTIAN

  4. For now Emerson was not upgrade on Calabria.
Pioli also tried with Musah, and Kalulu lost his space.

Losing Calabria after last season is not big problem, bigger is that there is no upgrade for him.

Emerson cost 8.3 million yearly, Calabria 3.7. Emerson must show up 2x better than him in this season.

  5. I am not a fan of Calabria’s current level of play, and at one point I thought it was normal for Milan to seek an upgrade to the right back position. However, Emerson Royal is a clear downgrade, not an upgrade, and it is very hard to understand why our management went for him, who is almost another Origi. We got rid of Kalulu whom I consider to be better than both Calabria and Emerson, as a right back, and then threw away 15MEuro on Emerson; why oh why??? So this is all very puzzling; it seems like we’re run by amateurs who have no capacity to gauge a player’s level of skill or lack thereof.

I wish Calabria all the best in his next club, because clearly Milan wants to move away from him. So now we’re stuck with Emerson and will continue to leak numerous goals from our right side. It’s terrible.

  6. They should resign Calabria to be the backup. 2 mil is right amount for him. He is good enough to play vs majority of the teams in serie A.

        1. Ok I’ll try it this way:
Backup to a player worse than him in almost every metric ? Really ?
Some are acting like we got Walker or Carvajal.

  7. calabria is better than emerson, i dont know what kinna football people in here have been watching, i have seen emerson holding his own playing against top players from manchester city, liverpool etc. calabria struggled against parma but according to most, he is better than emerson…..smh…..emerson is new to the team, give the man time to adapt and then judge him…i wouldnt want milan to sell calabria bc he has been loyal to the team for many years but not bc he is such a great player, tchhuuups….smh

  8. With Florenzi also likely gone as well, I think the current management is trying to fullfill the prophecy of having no italian in the team.
Right now we already have no italian in the starting XI.

    1. I’m Italian but I couldn’t care less if Milan has Italians in the starting XI or not. This is not national team football. It’s club football. I care for good players regardless of their nationality. Anything else is xenophobia. National origin shouldn’t be a reason to discriminate against anybody. I root passionately for Italian players when gli Azzurri are playing, but in club football whatever the nationality of a player is, is irrelevant to me as long as the player is good.

      1. How is it xenophobia to want an Italian team with Italian players? Are you racist to Italians? See both are dumb. You weirdos and your stupid buzzwords.

          1. Luigi, you have really made sense. Those who lack understanding or willing to fault people’s opinions unnecessarily will not understand your point. You must be good to be at Milan, be it Italian or…… However, Calabria to me, is a good player who is ready to give his all. Signing Emerson Royal as his upgrade is a shame!

      2. And I’m not Italian, don’t even care much about having “many Italians in the XI” but you should care a bit.
Italians will allow us to fill the UEFA lists requirments. Later this summer we found ourselves in a situation where we had to sell some foreigners in order to get new ones, not because we don’t have money, but because of lack of places. Had we had more Italians, this wouldn’t be a problem.
Also Italians are more likely to know serie A, acclimate quickly and perhaps love the shirt and fight for the club.
I think foreigners should be brought when they’re clearly much better than X Italian player in the same position. But if an Italian player and a foreign player are about the same quality wise (which is rare), you should go for the Italian.
But to ditch Calabria for Royal ? Come on.

      3. A supposed Italian who doesn’t CARE if the Italian team he claims to support has Italians, in an Italian team that plays in Italy, and known for their great rich Italian heritage. Especially the working class.

This is just too good😂🤣🤣🤣😂. Some. Of yall should think about going into full. Time stand up comedy.

Then you then go further to use the word xenophobia wrongly, because it sounds sweet or for whatever reason.

Oh my days. If the foundations of ACM could see it now, and what it has become. 😂🤣😂🤣🤣😂

  9. Most of the Italian budding stars are overrated when they haven’t even done anything extraordinary and that’s why a team like Milan that doesn’t like spending above 25m for a single player doesn’t go after them. I like kayode and Bellanova but you can’t get those players less than 25m. I like scalvini but can Milan afford him? He may cost 40m upwards. The problem with Milan is that they don’t have good scouts who see good qualities in young players.

    1. I think the problem is not Italian players are to expensive. The problem is Milan becoming very cheap. If you pay peanut, you get monkey.

  10. Inter Milan was basically for foreigners in history but cycle changed AC Milan is US Milan now. Without local and homegrown players we r not gonna win anything.

    1. Losing calabria is not the problem but the problem is to whom he’s much better than. Sometimes I wonder if the management got some sense atal. You want a RB with more defensive skills and you went for Emerson who’s more offensive and have no defensive tactics or stamina. Stupid decisions by the management all the time

  11. Does this brain dead management just not remember we need to have a certain amount of Italians in the squad? Not to mention he’s the best RB we have atm because they were dumb enough to waste money on a traffic cone like royal…

    1. Having mediocre Italian players just for the sake of the lists doesn’t help. We need good players regardless of their nationality. And with the crop of good Italian players coming out of our youth teams, I don’t really see the need to pursue others. Torriani, Liberali, Zeroli, Camarda, etc.

So we have Terracciano. He’s Italian. And, he is horrible, clueless, and a liability rather than an asset.

So you all feel we need more Italian players like Terracciano? Thanks, but no, thanks.

      1. Bellanova, Ricci, Retegui I would take over Emerson, Fofana, Abraham. We get it, you don’t want any Italians on the team.

  12. What planet is Zlatan on? Calabria is vastly superior to Emerson. We know he’s know Cafu, but he’s on the whole decent.
