Serafini: ‘Desperate search for fouls’ in Milan-Fiorentina highlights major VAR issue

By Isak Möller -

Following AC Milan’s win against Fiorentina, there were some heated discussions on social media with regard to the Rossoneri’s winning goal. However, once again, it was a case of looking for a foul as Luca Serafini argues.

One major downside to the introduction of VAR has been an increase in discussions regarding decisions made. Before VAR, errors were still identified and pointed out but there wasn’t much one could make retroactively.

VAR has contributed to the rules being reviewed all the time, as similar situations can occur in the following games and thus need to be cleared up. This has also resulted in many looking for fouls in every incident, as Serafini writes for MilanNews.

“In the last round of the league, the refereeing in Milan-Fiorentina ended up under the microscope in a desperate search for fouls. From Tomori’s tackle on Ikoné to Rebic’s alleged fouls in midfield, then on Terraciano on the 2-1 goal.

“It’s always a foul and always a penalty if the opponent commits the foul, but it isn’t if your team is responsible. The stamps and contacts that induce any footballer to throw himself on the ground screaming in writhing pain (non-existent) have never been a problem in the game of football from 1800 to 2021. Now they have become a reason for cards, punishments, reprimands, and indeed VAR,” he stated.

Ante Rebic clearly didn’t commit a foul on Terracciano and while Fikayo Tomori’s tackle was risky, he did take the ball and the referee judged that to be the case. The foul searching must stop, as Serafini argues well.

  1. “The stamps and contacts that induce any footballer to throw himself on the ground screaming in writhing pain (non-existent)”

Has this guy ever been stomped on his foot with pro cleats with full force? I’m guessing not.

  2. This has always happened in football and is one of the reasons many loath football players. Wanting free kicks and cards has always been a thing. Ronaldo cried many times before VAR 😅
