Serafini says ‘football is really strange’ amid Milan’s turnaround: “The season was over”

Speaking to MilanTV after AC Milan’s convincing 3-0 win over Lecce, the pundit Luca Serafini reflected on the start of the season and how Paulo Fonseca went from zero to hero. Football is ‘really strange’, as he put it.

Milan managed to build on their 2-1 win in the derby against Inter, beating Lecce in front of a sold-out San Siro yesterday evening. Three goals were scored in just five minutes and there were several positive stats to take from the game.

After the game, speaking live on MilanTV (via MilanNews), the pundit Luca Serafini discussed the start of the season and the turnaround Milan have made. Football can be really strange sometimes, as he put it, which Fonseca certainly has proven.

“We got what were wanted, which was confirmation after the derby. Milan played patiently at the beginning, they started slowly. Then three goals arrived in five minutes. The most important thing is that we had confirmation of our attitude and way of playing. It’s a very demanding system, but I’m convinced that this team can do great things.

“First place in the standings? Football is really strange. Ten days ago the season was already over, far from the top, Inter could have run away and now, Milan are at the top of the standings instead. Maybe it will only be for one night, but the Rossoneri are still in the leading group,” he began.

However, Milan will be up against Bayer Leverkusen and since they have bounced back in the league, we now also need to see it in the Champions League. It will be far from an easy task, but there is light at the end of the tunnel as highlighted by Serafini.

“Now focus on Leverkusen, they are within reach of Milan. Then there will be Real Madrid, but after that the schedule will be downhill in the Champions League. The season has turned around,” he concluded.

    1. It’s bizarre…
First three games, 5 goals scored, 6 conceded.
Last three games, 9 Goals scored, 1 conceded.
      In the league of course.

Still a small sample size to really make anything of this team. But thankfully there’s been a clear progression and improvement and that’s whats important. To carry this forward.

      1. Indeed..thing is even tho we didn’t play all that well in first 3 games we had plenty of shots. So opportunities were being made be we were not clinical. The def, I shan’t waste words, all clear how cràp it was.
Now we’re more clinical not by much but enough. And the real difference is we are more stable in the back. Still ways to go but definitely improving

      2. Yeah it’s called being patient and allowing the team, which brought in a new coach and some new players, time to gel and learn a new system of play. It’s not that hard to understand.

Last year they brought in new players, but were using the same flawed system. Good players like Pulisic, Reijnders and RLC immediately adapted to it.

This year the system has changed and so has the coach. Players needed time to adapt and adjust.

Even Fonseca was saying, Pioli had them all running marathons on the counter instead of playing possession based football. If we want to go back to being a good team that can play actual football, it’s going to take more than just 2 months to wean them off of Pioli’s bad tactics. For now we have seen the changes, and they are welcome ones.

  1. Most of football journalists nowadays lacks respect for Milan and they have nothing good to report about us. ( Not about this post but generally speaking)
They forgot Milan is the only club which has Italy recognized in Europe yet they are blind when it comes to recognizing that. If Milan had lost to inter the journalists would have been writing garbage stories about Milan but now that we beat them nothing is written about inter. All I know is that no matter what they write about Milan we are still th Pride of Italy in Europe and we still have some great records which no club has ever beaten. Forza Milan and garbage to journalists writing sh.t about us

    1. Yes, the GdS is particularly nasty about Milan. They are a bunch of interisti and juventini and love to stir trouble especially before big games. They try to fabricate crises and sometimes (or rather, often) they clearly make up stories. Don’t listen to anything they say!

Not to forget, there are dozens of “journalists” who post or publish dramatic headlines and articles because they want online clicks and on-print sales. Think of it; these tabloids need to sell their online and print versions every single day and there aren’t enough eye-catching headlines based on reality, so they make up their own.

“The players and Fonseca seem to have reached peace and unity” doesn’t sell as much as “Fonseca has lost the locker room and is about to be sacked.”

That’s one of the reasons for the mercato frenzi, every signing window. The rumors go crazy. They daily produce ever-changing lists of “targets” and say such and such is hours from being announced as signed, when often there hasn’t even been the slightest contact between the club and that player’s entourage or current club.

And the funny thing is that fans in a forum like this one seem to buy these lies and start harshly criticizing the management for trying to sign such and such player, when management hasn’t been any close to that player.

In terms of mercato, remember to only pay attention to official announcements and/or statements by real selling/buying club officials. The rest is click bait.

    2. That’s true they disrespect Milan and we are still the best in Europe by history. But the bitter truth is that Inter currently is still the best team in Serie A even if their not doing well bcos by the time they pick form they can win 8 or more consecutive matches which I don’t see any Serie A team can do that.

  2. Considering how other teams were stumbling this wasn’t over. We just got up and quickly recovered our form. And Fonseca showed he could operate under pressure.

Also as others have said. Some in the media have a particular slant deeply against Milan.

  3. After the draw was made, I predicted losses to Madrid and Liverpool, a tie with Leverkusen and the rest 5 are wins.

I don’t think this assessment changes even with our uptick in form.

  4. I never understood the panic aspect but it was legit to question the strategy if we’re making all these changes with no real benefit. I think that was the point. And yes, if we’d lose the derby the psychological impact would have been devastating and continued for quite a few more matches, plus the table would not have looked good for us.
Note that we had to try a formation which we never planned for personnel around in order to turn our season around already in a handful of games so….yea I kinda get it. Our current formation reminds me of the feeling around the 433 early on last year…until we meet a team that exploits it and it’s back to our default. The problem is what exactly is our default now..
    Anyways….
