Serginho calls Paqueta ‘the new Messi’ – explains the Brazilian’s struggles

By Isak Möller -

Ever since he arrived from Flamengo in January this year, AC Milan have had high hopes for Lucas Paqueta. However, even though the Brazilian youngster has done well, he hasn’t been able to reach his full potential just yet.

At the start of the season, he certainly hasn’t been able to perform to the best of his abilities, perhaps due to the poor form of the entire team. In recent weeks, though, Stefano Pioli has managed to turn things around at the club.

Paqueta, on the other hand, still has some work to do. For the time being, he isn’t even a regular starter, as the manager has opted for Bonaventura and Kessie alongside Bennacer in the midfield. Then again, he just needs to find his rhythm.

In an interview with Sky Italia (via Calciomercato.com), Milan legend Serginho spoke about his compatriot. To the former left-back, it’s just a question of adapting to Italian football, then Paqueta will live up to the hype.

“I saw him play many times in Brazil. I call him ‘the new Messi’. I see a Paqueta that must be more calm and grow. Italian football is a lot more difficult.

“He plays like he’s in a five-a-side team, with the ball under his foot. He still hasn’t been able to take the step and switch from Brazilian to Italian football,” Serginho concluded.
