Serie A designator ‘annoyed’ by Maldini’s comments about young referees

By Isak Möller -

AC Milan only got one point from their game against Udinese on Friday evening and although they didn’t play well, the away side’s equaliser shouldn’t have stood. Of course, this annoyed the Rossoneri a lot.

After the game, technical director Paolo Maldini even took part in an interview to share his thoughts on the refereeing performance. For those who don’t know, this is highly unusual and goes against Milan’s policy.

“VAR, used like this, hurts as it isn’t the first time [for us]. The handball is an obvious mistake. One more thing, we cannot always have a rookie referee at San Siro. It’s not easy to referee here,” he stated.

Maldini hasn’t received any criticism for his words as he said them with elegance and respect, simply highlighting the obvious mistakes that have been made. However, as per Gazzetta Dello Sport (via MilanNews), Serie A’s referee designator is ‘annoyed’ by the comments.

The man in question is Gianluca Rocchi, who recently retired after many years as a high-quality referee. He feels that the generational change is necessary, per the newspaper, and while he doesn’t want to force the young referees into the game, he feels they need the experience.

That is also why Matteo Marchetti, who refereed Milan-Udinese and is considered very promising, will not be stopped. In fairness, the blame should be put on Marco Guida, who was in charge of VAR and missed the handball.

  1. Maldini criticism is on point. Not just he sick of watching his club lost important points over and over because referee keeps making big mistakes, but he also wants serie A referee to increased their quality and judgement when comes to using VAR.

The criticism not just benefits Milan but also other serie A clubs as well.

But this just shows how serie A referee are still behind compare to other big leagues.

  2. Go cheat more Mr. Designator… Milan has been truly robbed more than any other team fighting for the scudetto this year and its despicable
