Shevchenko discusses ‘recovering’ Milan, win against Spurs and future of Leao

By Oliver Fisher -

Former AC Milan striker Andriy Shevchenko hopes that the team have overcome their difficulties so far in 2023 with the last two wins.

Interviewed by Corriere della Sera, Shcevchenko spoke about the last two matches that the Rossoneri have played and how they now seem like they might be turning a corner, with his comments relayed by SempreMilan.it.

“Milan, after the victory against Torino, seemed to me to be recovering, more brilliant and with the motivations of the European nights. I hope that the difficult moment is overcome. Let’s remember how they were able to turn the situation around last year in the league with courage, thanks to a magical alchemy of all the components,” he began.

Shevchenko is a man who knows the Champions League well having scored the winning penalty in the 2003 final win over Juventus, and he spoke about Tuesday night’s 1-0 win over Spurs at San Siro.

“They must have courage and think game after game. Considering the result of the first leg, they have the chance to qualify for the quarter-finals. It is true that the English at home play with different rhythms, but Pioli’s team can do it.”

Saturday’s game against Monza will be an interesting one given that Silvio Berlusconi and Adriano Galliani are in charge of Monza having spent over 30 years at Milan, leading them to the very top of European football.

“Knowing his and Galliani’s ambitions, I was sure he would build a competitive team. Of course, I never would have imagined seeing him at this point of the season close to the cup zone,” Shevchenko said.

Finally, Sheva spoke about Milan’s current talisman Rafael Leao, who was excellent agains Spurs but with doubts over his future given the lack of renewal.

“I hope he stays. Milan is the ideal place to grow gradually: last year they won the Scudetto, this year they are showing off in the Champions League. I’d like him to sign the renewal.”
