Sky: Milan’s problems in big games resurface as another target vanishes

Following AC Milan’s exit from the Coppa Italia at the hands of Atalanta on Wednesday night, questions have come to light about the Rossoneri’s inability to perform in big games.

This season has seen targets slip and fall consistently. Inter’s nine-point lead, frustration in the Champions League, and a controversial loss to Atalanta in the Coppa Italia means there is now just a faint hope for the Scudetto and a need for success in the Europa League.

Sky Italy reports the Rossoneri have won four of their big games so far in the 2023-24 season against Lazio, PSG, Newcastle and Roma. The draws against Napoli, Borussia Dortmund and Newcastle do little to mask the fact that there are six big losses, which need to be investigated.

➤ Roma 1-2 W

➤ Inter 5-1 L

➤ Newcastle 0-0 D

➤ Lazio 2-0 W

➤ Dortmund 0-0 D

➤ Juventus 0-1 L

➤ PSG 3-0 L

➤ Napoli 2-2 D

➤ PSG 2-1 W

➤ Dortmund 1-3 L

➤ Atalanta 3-2 L

➤ Newcastle 1-2 W

➤ Atalanta 1-2 L

The loss against Atalanta is the latest of a series of results which are not good enough. However, this now means that the scrutiny about a positive run in the Europa League will increase substantially, given it is probably the Diavolo’s only chance of a positive season.

Ultimately, the goals set out at the beginning of the season have not been achieved, and Milan’s inability to perform when it matters most has cost them. Unless they show signs of improvement in Europe, it will be a season of what could have been.

  1. No need for investigation.
The loss vs Juventus came from a lucky deflection.
The loss vs Dortmund came after Giroud missed a penalty and Thiaw got injured leaving Milam with Krunic playing as a CB.
    PSG just has better players.
The other 3 losses, 2 vs Atalanta and 1 vs Inter happened because those 2 teams have smarter coaches than Pioli. Simone Inzaghi owns Pioli. Gasperini outsmarted Pioli twice.
Gasperini yesterday beat Pioli with CDK playing as a striker.
We will not know how good all Milan players can be until a coach comes in that knows how to use them besides just making them play 1v1 and counter attacking.

    1. Partially true but there are no lucky deflections and unlucky situations here. Yes injuries werent on our side but Pioli doesnt have any tactics and the only unlucky situation is that he is still the coach. We cant be talking about luck against Juve that we dominated in that game for 70minutes, against Napoli where we were 2 goals up yet still managed to draw and against inter where we were demolished.

    2. Well it is the quality of players also. Some of those teams have way better players and especially bench, so backups when first choice is not available.

      1. Honestly almost no one only psg and inter is debatable to have better players.Wouldnt even say the have better starting line ups but when it come to Thier benches the quality is much better

  2. I’ve been saying we only performed against smaller teams since maybe before or around round 4 or 5. This just reinforces that. And even the two wins against Lazio and Roma were when they were both out of form and in the bottom half of the table. The only true big team wins were PSG and Newcastle.

  3. The issue is that the transfers made over the summer were actually the transfers needed the previous summer, so Milan are a year behind in terms of development. There’s nothing wrong with the players, but more players of quality are needed as well as a manager who is consistent. It’s no coincidence that Ibra has been brought back in a role of influence – he is more respected than Pioli by the squad.
