Sky journalist claims Pioli’s selection ‘risk’ in Coppa Italia has club’s support

By Oliver Fisher -

Stefano Pioli has support from the AC Milan management in his decision to field a very young side for tonight’s Coppa Italia last 16 tie against Cagliari at San Siro, a report claims.

This evening Milan will take on the Sardinian side aiming to obtain qualification for the quarter-finals of the cup, and Pioli will present a line-up full of very young players and without the top players in the squad.

For example, most sources are reporting that the likes of Jan-Carlo Simic, Alex Jimenez, Chaka Traore and Luka Romero will get the nod in what is a great opportunity for some of the fringe players to impress but also a chance for the starters to rest.

Peppe Di Stefano spoke to Sky (via Radio Rossonera) about Pioli’s decision to rotate so heavily, given that it is a game in a competition in which Milan were knocked out at the first hurdle last season and haven’t won it for 21 years.

“Tonight Milan and Cagliari will face each other in the round of 16 of the Italian Cup , both with revolutionized lineups. I’ll explain what’s behind these AC Milan lineup choices,” he said.

“From what we understand there is maximum respect for the Italian Cup, but the primary objectives are Serie A and the Europa League.

“Today there will be a very young AC Milan, considering that the average age of the players on the pitch will be only 23 years old, a player born in 2000 in practice. I would like to underline that this choice is shared between the coach and the club.

“There are two reasons for this choice. On the one hand, resting the big names… I’m talking about Pulisic, Kjaer, Florenzi, Loftus-Cheek, Leao and Giroud, who have played a lot lately.

“The second thing is to give an opportunity to the players, especially from Ignazio Abate’s Primavera, who have been doing well over the last two years.

“We repeat, in addition to Romero, who does not belong to the youth sector but is still 19 years old, Simic and Jimenez, former Real Madrid players, are playing today; he played Zeroli a few days ago and in the future Bartesaghi will certainly play, who was stopped yesterday due to flu.

“This choice is shared between the coach and the club. There is a risk behind this choice. They all know that changing so much and fielding such a young team is risky, but it is a risk that this Milan wants and must take.”

  1. So, basically management forced Pioli to rest players otherwise he would have played the same players he plays every 3 days until they get injured.
