Sky: Sporting fine continues to complicate Leao’s renewal with Milan – the situation

By Isak Möller -

Rafael Leao’s contract will expire in 2024 and AC Milan are currently working on a contract renewal for the winger. However, given his success lately, it is proving to be rather difficult for the Rossoneri.

Leao is one of the best players in Serie A and has become an almost irreplaceable player for Milan on the left wing. Therefore, Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara are keen on reaching an agreement on a contract renewal but the situation is complicated.

As per Sky Italia (via SempreMilan.it), the fine that needs to be paid to Sporting continues to make the negotiations difficult. Leao, understandably so, doesn’t want to pay it himself and wants significant help from the club.

In addition to this, his salary demands aren’t exactly low and other suitors aren’t exactly lacking. Milan know what Leao’s needs are and will work hard to reach an agreement within the right parameters, but only time can tell what the outcome will be.

  1. Leao has world class potential and can be part of our team for the next decade. Dest, Origi and Bakayoko are in the top 5 highest salaries on the team. In total they waste 15 million euros a year for the team. We just need to get rid of all of them and give half of it to Leao.

All 3 of them should retire in the MLS.

    1. Wrong actually, His contract expires in June 2024. He can officially commence negotiations in January 2024. We are only obligated to put a mega offer on the table in Late 2023 to avoid his leaving on a free a la Kessie, and the other two unmentionables. If I have it right, Milan are ok with his salary demands. Only his outstanding fine due to sporting is the issue. On principle, WE CANNOT PAY THAT!!! Liability is mostly strict not vicarious in contractual disputes. Simply, employers don’t handle breach of contract consequences for employees arising from their prior employer’s claim UNLESS they were complicit in the breach or Benefited from it. Milan didn’t benefit from Leao’s actions. They purchased him for value from Lille who might have benefited, thus the split fine between Lille and Leao. So, we should only pay his wages, taxes and maybe agent commissions. Nothing more. If he’s adamant, we sell and let that drama be another club’s future headache.

  2. Leao has to work 3 jobs (footballer, model and rapper) just to pay his bills. He’s living paycheck to paycheck and we’re wasting the money that he deserves on bench players

  3. “Leao, understandably so, doesn’t want to pay it himself ”

So… Let me get it this straight… Leao chooses to break his binding contract with Sportin Lisbon and move to another club and then doesn’t want to pay the fine because HE broke the contract? Sounds perfectly OK in every possible point of view…

    1. What’s really BS is he “broke” his contract because sporting supporters broke into the training ground and assaulted him and his teammates. Idk but if there ever was a reason to break contract it because your employer can’t keep you safe. The fine is completely unjustifiable yet in Europe whay can you expect…

      1. Apparently Leao wasn’t there that day on the training ground so that’s why the judge ruled differently in his case as opposed to the others. But to me it’s still an unsafe environment whether or not he was there because of uncertainty thereafter

    2. How was possible that he could be registered for another club, while his contract with Sporting was still not expired? Does this mean that any player tomorrow can leave and play for other club?

  4. sell leao and buy Doku, Mudryk and Ounahi or Auora the French AM , this will fix Milan”s trident position, problem solved, three very good players are better than one.

  5. Leao costs other team 20 million fine Sporting he owns plus salary. All big clubs needs to wait for him, Like psg can wait now Skriniar. Inter rejected 65 million for Skriniar. I think Inter would difficult extend him.
Milan need 20 million for fine plus gross salary for Leao. I bet Leao can get at least 11 million plus fine in Premier League. I think Milan need 15 million for gross salary Leao plus 4 million per year for fine, it could be almost 20 million per year.
Milan must be strict; either there is or there is no salary cup. Waiting for players to accept terms that club offered is nonsense. Inter lost 65 million for Skriniar, Milan for now lost 85 million from Chelsea for Leao.

No one will give in summer 20 million per year to Leao and 100 million to Milan. Everyone will wait for his contract to be expired.

Oh, there is agent commission as well 😉
