SM: Updates expected in the next 48 hours as Milan finalise Leao offer

By Isak Möller -

Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara are keen on renewing Rafael Leao’s contract ahead of the World Cup and negotiations are currently ongoing. An official renewal offer could be tables very soon, we have learned.

The winger has continued his great form this season, currently on four goals and eight assists, and it’s not exactly surprising that big teams are keeping tabs on him. Milan, as such, are keen on renewing the contract as soon as possible.

As learned by our colleagues at SempreMilan.it, Maldini and Massara could meet with Jorge Mendes in the coming 48 hours. Between Tuesday and Wednesday, in fact, the official offer should be tabled by Milan.

The offer will most likely be worth €5m per season, which is a significant pay rise from the current €1.8m. Furthermore, Milan are willing to pay a part of the €19m fine that Leao owes Sporting, which could help get the deal over the line.

  1. What a waste of time. IF this report is true, we all know this will NOT get the deal over the line and will just cause more stress and doubt for the fans. Milan/Redbird have a decision to make. This is not the time to try to bargain and haggle over the price. We will NOT get a discount for this one. 5M will NOT get this done. Offer 7M and pay his fine. It really sad, if we haggle for him. With the Growth Decree, we aren’t even really paying 7M – it’s more like only half that amount. So this shouldn’t be an issue. If we lose him it’s our fault. Pay him what he requested and see if his words about staying are true. If we offer less than that then of course he will leave. It’s only fair and reasonable Leao should be paid one as of the highest paid players IN ITALY at 7M. Players like Rabiot makes that much. So don’t low ball him with a 5M offer. That only gives other clubs opportunities to jump in and make him a bigger offer in January. Make our best and final offer at 7M with his fine paid off and that’s it. THEN if he rejects it and says he now wants 10M – well then we can consider a sale. But that hasn’t happened. When clubs like PSG, Man U, Man City, Chelsea, etc…are all after him – we have no leverage to try and get him at a lower fee. Stop wasting time and give him what he’s worth and get him signed. THEN IF we need to sell we can do it from a position of strength when he’s under a team controlled new 5 year deal and we will get much more than the 150M release clause. Smart business is to tie up your best asset. We will see what kind of club Redbird aspire us to become. Are we a selling club or one that keeps our star players? We will find out every soon.

      1. Ibra is a universal superstar. Has more fans of his own than most of the big clubs in Europe.
People all around the world turn on the TV, come to the stadium, buy his Milan jersey even at 40 to watch Milan because of Ibra. Serie A isn’t a popular league across the world anymore, and Ibra made it interesting again.
Milan was making way more money of Ibra than they were paying him.
Most of us Milan fans don’t like to hear it but Not many fans outside of serie A know who Leao is let alone turn on the TV to watch him. He has done nothing in European competitions or for his national team.

    1. Growth decree didn’t reduce the base salary-it reduce the tax that comes with it.

So a player with 7m wages that is long playing in league and no longer receive growth decree tax, the money we paid them actually will be 14m – 7m wage and 7m tax.

The Leao’s case – we will paid 7m wage PLUS around 2-4m tax. So around 10m per season. If you include the fine he got, which is also actually have nothing to do with Milan, that amount will be higher.

    2. ” With the Growth Decree, we aren’t even really paying 7M – it’s more like only half that amount. So this shouldn’t be an issue.”

When media is telling the figures, they’re always referring to net amounts unless stated otherwise. So it’s 7M€ PLUS taxes. Therefore the sum Milan would be paying is closer to 10M€/year.

  2. calm down boys

    we’re the champion of Italy.

if he doesn’t renew, we’ll get cash to reinvest.
let’s believe M&M on this one — they + Pioli handed us the scudetto after a decade of mediocrity

  3. Milan can either give him 7 mil a year that he is asking for and Leao can pay the fine he owes to Sporting out of his own salary.
Or they can give him lower salary and pay the fine for him.
He can’t have it both ways.
Milan shouldn’t even be asked in the first place to help or pay his fine. Milan had nothing to do with that. The fine should be payed by Lille, the club that benefited the most and by Leao’s agent, who organized the whole thing.
If Leao doesn’t like it, call the interested clubs and tell him you’ll accept the 70-80mil they are offering in January.
    Everyone is replaceable.
Napoli found Kvaratskhelia for 10 mil. Milan can replace Leao just fine with 70-80 mil.
Just don’t let him leave on a free transfer. Hopefully Maldini has learned his lesson after flunking the test 4 times in the last 2 years

    1. Yes he can have it both ways. It’s all about supply and demand my friend. He’s in huge demand. So YES another club will gladly pay him 7M if not more plus pay his fine. We really shouldn’t be complaining as mentioned before w the growth decree we only pay half that amount of his salary out of pocket. Second, why would you sell for 80M??? LOL. That doesn’t make any sense. He has a release clause valid until 2024 so you would drop it by 50% with a year and a half left??? LMAO. That’s horrible no offense. I agree nobody is irreplaceable – but to panic sell in January for HALF his release clause whist in the middle of Scudetto race and hopefully knock out rounds of CL is crazy – and even crazier to think you can easily find Leao’s replacement also in January?? No. Your also assuming this new ownership will actually reinvest the entire amount back imo the team roster. We don’t know if they would actually do that. The smart business decision is to tie up your best asset and THEN if you need to sell later if we need the $ to reinvest in the squad or Leao wants to leave etc…you don’t panic sell for half the cost. Put the offer of 7M and to pay his fine in front of him now – THEN if he doesn’t sign or says he wants more $ – THEN we can sell if needed. Nobody is irreplaceable agreed – but there is a smart way to do this and panic selling in January isn’t one of them IMO

      1. You can ask for his release clause to be payed in full only if the player is locked in under long term contract , he is in demand from other clubs and you don’t want or need to sell him.
If a player is about to enter the last year of his contract and Milan is the one that is trying to move the player they can’t go demanding 150 mil. 1st he isn’t worth nowhere near that 2nd Milan is losing leverage with every passing day.
If he doesn’t resign by January Milan will be forced to sell otherwise they ll be risking repeating the Giggio, Kessie, Hakan , Romagnoli scenario.

      2. “We really shouldn’t be complaining as mentioned before w the growth decree we only pay half that amount of his salary out of pocket. ”

Just shows how much you actually understand these things. LOL.

        1. “Second, why would you sell for 80M??? LOL. That doesn’t make any sense. He has a release clause valid until 2024 so you would drop it by 50% with a year and a half left??? LMAO. That’s horrible no offense. ”

Release clause doesn’t mean he will be only sold for that sum. Barca puts 500M€ release clauses on their players. Does it mean that other teams are actually paying those figures? Of course not!

And if you think that when the contract is running out other teams are still willing to pay “full price” for the player you are out of your mind. Look how much Barca paid for Lewandowski.

  4. It come down to Leao’s preference. He is not going to get the money oil or PL clubs can offer, thats for sure, so if he’s not all about money he will renew, or if he is… Its time to say goodbye.

        1. Yes exactly, sorry I wasn’t clear. Milan is not in the position to go into a bidding war over his paycheck with Oil clubs, we just cant afford it.

I hope Leao, picks Milan over money. But it is A LOT of money. Temptation will be ridiculous.

          1. @Juro No worries mate. My post sounded good in my head, but ended up being quite ambiguous. Really nit your fault for understanding it the way you did.

Bottom line, we hope Leso will stay, but it is a lot of money that is on the table…

  5. Smart business if milan sell him with the highest price. Milan have structure budget salary so M&M will do it as long as gazidis still at milan board. Like he do it at arsenal. We can see now arsenal are stable on his budget salary and i think also profit. Football these day already different mindset…
