Tatarusanu responds to criticism and discusses his assist: “I showed what I can do”

By Isak Möller -

AC Milan clinched three important points against Monza but they failed to keep a clean sheet as the away side scored a great free-kick in the second half. Ciprian Tatarusanu spoke to the media after the 4-1 win.

The Romanian goalkeeper has been quite criticised over the last few weeks for his performances, with a lot of ups and downs. This evening, he got a 6/10 in our player ratings for a few good stops and a nice pass to Brahim Diaz.

After the game, Tatarusanu spoke to DAZN (via MilanNews) and responded to the criticism he has received lately. He was also asked about his relationship with Mike Maignan, who has suffered another injury and will remain out for a while.

On the criticism…

“In football, even for the team as a whole, there will always be positive and negative comments. The best answer is on the pitch and today I showed what I can do.”

On the assist to Brahim…

“It’s the first assist I have given, I’m even happier. With this goal, we unlocked the game and got an important victory.”

On Maignan…

“We have a good relationship between us, we talk after matches and also in training. He was in great shape, I’m sorry.”

As said, Maignan will likely miss the rest of 2023 and that means Tatarusanu will be the starting goalkeeper for the foreseeable future. Hopefully, he will grow and get more comfortable as he gets more playing time.

  1. Tata, you saved us in countless occasions tonight + gave an assist. Thank you. Ranocchia’s shot was perfectly executed, not your fault. Don’t listen to the noise.

  2. He had been bad both passing and also coming off his line to attack aerial balls coming in on crosses/corners this season; HOWEVER, give him credit — he definitely played better today.

  3. I played as a keeper for around 3 years.

Here’s the highlights, free kick around the 2:30 mark
He’s actually on the side of goal where the ball goes, so he has more time than if he were on the other side, so good/lucky positioning. Look, in slow motion if you want (it is hard to see, wish we had another angle) around the 2:41 mark, which is where you can more clearly see that he misses it badly. He’s gone to the right spot, but incorrectly judged the dip, even though it’s been dipping the whole time – his hand goes down too far. This is because his whole body goes down too far and fast, so even though his hand is actually in the right spot his body’s inertia pushes it too far down and too far along, so it hits the base of his hand/wrist, and bounces off and in.
It would be more understandable if he were on the other side of the goal, but it isn’t a complete howler, because it is a really good (and possibly unexpected) FK, but I still think Maignan would have saved it. Also, if Origi hadn’t blocked the next FK (with his hand?) that would have been a goal. Other than that, I can fault the boys very little.

      1. It won’t let post the full thing so i’ll try to do it in segments.
