Tomori ‘excited’ to begin UCL journey as he thanks ‘kind’ Ibrahimovic

Fikayo Tomori has stressed how important it is for AC Milan to learn from their mistakes in order to put the derby disappointment behind them and start well in Europe.

Tomori was forced to watch from home as Milan lost 5-1 against their city rivals on Saturday afternoon as he served a suspension following a red card before the international break against Roma.

The defender was interviewed by Sky on the eve of the game against Newcastle in the first group stage match of the 2023-24 Champions League and his comments were relayed by MilanNews.

“We are disappointed, we have another match and we have to get up and do better,” he began.

“We know our qualities well, we didn’t want to lose the derby but we lost and we have to learn from our mistakes. We will try to do better in the next league and Champions League matches.”

Newcastle are an opponent that Tomori knows well from his time in England and that kind of experience is what could help the Rossoneri, who have often struggled against Premier League opponents in recent years.

“We are excited to play in front of our fans, we can start our group well. We know the quality of Newcastle, they play very deep, we have to be ready. We want to improve on the performance of the last match.”

There was some surprise when Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s car pulled up at the training ground today and he was spotted speaking to Pioli and CEO Giorgio Furlani while the team did their morning session.

“It was nice to see Zlatan again, he didn’t say much because we had to train. He’s a kind man, who gives us confidence and a voice,” Tomori said.

Finally, the former Chelsea man also looked ahead to the return of Sandro Tonali who left Milan for Newcastle just a couple of months ago in what was a club-record sale.

“Tomorrow it will be nice to see Sandro, but he is an opponent. We have to put aside our friendship and play, then after the match I will talk to him.”
