Fikayo Tomori and Sergio Conceicao

TMW: ‘Essentially disappeared’ – Tomori struggling for minutes after rejecting winter exit

Fikayo Tomori had the chance to leave AC Milan in the winter mercato for a Premier League return, but he turned down the chance. Now, he may be regretting that decision.

In recent years, it has often been said that Tomori has the potential to be the difference maker for Milan; when he has been good, the Rossoneri have followed, when he has been bad, again, the club has followed.

Of course, as a defender, performances matter more than others on the pitch perhaps, with bad games more easily identifiable and vice versa. However, the Englishman has had wavering chances this season to actually show his worth.

Under Paulo Fonseca, the central defender started positively, but then was often overlooked, which is what sparked the idea of a potential departure, but Sergio Conceicao eventually decided to give him a try and throughout January, the defender was essential.

Now a month on, the defender has been tossed aside, and sits far behind in the rankings once again, as TMW states. He has ‘essentially disappeared’ and the coach no longer trusts him it seems, with his last start coming almost a month ago.

With the right conditions, perhaps he will leave in the summer, and maybe, January was the right time to go, despite his wishes.

  1. He should be starting because of his pace alone at LCB. Tomori and Gabbia should be the starting CB’s. He played his best with Kjaer and Gabbia has similar characteristics.

    1. I think for next season they need to sell several players, with low statistics and standard. One of them, is definitely Tomori.
They need tonhave big investment for CB position. They missed opportunity to buy proven Italian defender – Buongiorno.
With Tomori, Ruben Loftus, Chukwueze, Emerson Royal, should go also, plus some of loaned players.
They need to keep the strongest names in the team.

    2. Tomori played well next to Kjaer because he was coaching him during games. Tomori has 0 football IQ, his pace allows him to recover from his mistakes. Gabbia has similar playing characteristics, but can’t coach Tomori like Kjaer did.

  2. In my opinion gabbia is the best defender we have and makes his cb pairing shine. When ever he isn’t playing the CBS always play a terribly. He has great positioning and reading of the game, with not much pace. Which is the 2 best qualities in a cb, not pace. Acceleration is a really good quality over pace as well since CBS have little time to get to their top speed unlike everyone else on the pitch.

    1. The team just dey under perform, I say add 1 or 2 Italian to the starting eleven to give the team something extra. Gabbia and Tomori is my preferred choice but Tiaw and Pavlovic and well above average CB in these days game. My preferred eleven with the coash aggressive style is Mike, Walker, Gabbia, Tomori, Theo, Fofana, Tijjani, Pulicic, Leao, Felix/Sotti, Giminez in a 1-4-1-4-1 where the 1 positions is most important. Make am plug and play with any substitute, and our substitutes are well above average with experience to add. Consistency in Selection is Key and we no need press teams high cos our forwards need space behind Der defence.

      1. I agree for the most part I would just change tomori for pavlovic, and terraciano in the DM. Terra isn’t the most technical and best player but he has the grit and determination for a DM. He can also drop back to make a back 5 or 3 when necessary too since he also has experience as a cb.

  3. This is a very stupid article.
Milan has 4 central defenders – none of them is exceptional but on the whole they are adequate – in alphabetical order: gabbia; pavlovich; thiaw; tomori.
Rightly or wrongly ( i do not like it) concenciao does not play fixed duo but alternates. So obviously, 2 are in and 2 are out. The 2 out are “unhappy” …. in fact yesterday gabbia’s agent was complaining about lack of game time for gabbia.
Only one solution for head coach – change 2 central defenders during half time of every match – that way the four will play every match and no one will grumble or get angry.
