GdS: Pioli to rely on Tonali-Bennacer-Kessie trio vs. Empoli but formation must be decided

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan head coach Stefano Pioli is leaning towards fielding the same trio in midfield that worked so well against Napoli on Sunday, a report claims.

The middle of the park is arguably where Milan won the game in Naples as Franck Kessie limited the impact of Fabian Ruiz who is so important in Spalletti’s system, while Sandro Tonali took care of Zielinski and Ismael Bennacer did not let Lobotka breathe at all.

According to today’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport (via MilanNews), Pioli is preparing his side in view of Saturday’s match against Empoli at San Siro where he knows another slip-up against a lower-ranking team could be fatal in the Rossoneri’s Scudetto hopes.

At the moment, it seems likely that the Tonali-Bennacer-Kessie trio will remain in the starting XI, but what remains to be seen is whether Pioli will reuse the 4-1-4-1 seen against Napoli or if the Ivorian will play as a pure attacking midfielder as he did in the reverse fixture against Empoli, in which he scored a brace.
