La Gazzetta dello Sport (via MilanNews) recalls how there was a lot of talk about Olivier Giroud’s splendid acrobatic winning goal after the 2-1 win against the Ligurians, but ignoring Tonali’s beautiful assist would be wrong.
The young Rossoneri midfielder is growing from all points of view, becoming the engine of Stefano Pioli’s midfield alongside Ismael Bennacer. Pioli has always stressed that Tonali is capable of becoming a player who can play as a regista, as a box-to-box midfielder or even as a playmaker.
Indeed, Tonali’s tactical evolution has led him to become a sort of ‘full-fledged player’ in his role and for this reason Pioli continues to rely on him in the middle of the field. I agree with your comments: Tonali’s a fine symbol for the Rossoneri and resembles Gattuso in many ways. However, I think Gattuso was tougher and more ruthless in the defensive aspects of his role than Tonali. The latter, on the other hand, is more elegant, creative and attack minded. His assist for Giroud against Spezia was exceptional, as was his disallowed goal.
