Tonali bids emotional farewell to Milan: “Not goodbye, but see you later”

Sandro Tonali has said goodbye to the AC Milan fans after his move to Newcastle United was officially confirmed, suggesting that he might come back in the future.

Milan have confirmed on their official website that Tonali has completed his move to Newcastle. The club thanked the midfielder for the ‘three splendid years together’ and wished him ‘the very best in his professional and personal future’.

Via a statement on his official Instagram account, Tonali bid an emotional farewell to the Milan fans and hinted at a desire to return one day.

“Today I find myself here with a mix of emotions in my heart. As you know, I have decided to embark on a new adventure and a new challenge.

“I begin by thanking the club that welcomed me and gave me the opportunity to be part of this extraordinary club, which is and will always remain my home for me.

“I thank those who made sure that I wore the colours of my favorite team and those who managed the situation with availability and sharing in the last few weeks.

“I’ve learned a lot in these three years and I’ve found a football family among clubs, team-mates and technical staff, who have supported and guided me along my path. It is thanks to you that I have been able to improve as a footballer and as a man.

“I understand that this farewell can arouse mixed emotions and it’s normal that there are when you leave a big piece of your heart, but it’s important to remember that in football, as in life, changes are sometimes a reason for growth for everyone.

“Now I want to thank my people: you who, like me, carry the Rossoneri colours in your heart. I will never forget the songs of the Sud, the 19th Scudetto, all the wonderful moments shared together and the love for our Milan.

“I wish you all, club and fans, the best for the future and I’m sure you will still do great things together. A warm hug, with the hope that it is not goodbye, but see you later.

“Forza Milan. Sandro.”

According to what Fabrizio Romano is reporting, Tonali joins Newcastle on €70m deal with add-ons included, while Milan will also receive 10% of the proceeds from any future resale of the Italy international. It is a club-record sale for the Rossoneri, and a record for an Italian player.

We attempted to pick apart the background of Tonali’s exit and what it means for Milan’s project under the new management in a recent feature, with eyes now on how the money received is spent to rebuild the squad.

  1. Run down your contract then come back to us Sandrino. You’ll be in your prime years and we will welcome you back with open arms. This would be amazing, in 5 years in maybe a new stadium. The prodigal son returning as a man. I’m looking at is as a 5 year loan for 70m

  2. Good riddance. The most overrated player in the squad by far, I’ve never wanted someone to leave so much. Loftus-Cheek is a better player so we’ve already improved our midfield without any big signings. All we need now is someone to replace Diaz, and if Pulisic and Chukwueze come, we’ll be dancing.
