Sandro Tonali will return to San Siro this evening for the second time since he left Milan, after the Champions League game for Newcastle last season.

As Corriere dello Sport (via MilanNews) recalls this morning, it will be Tonali’s first time since back he was suspended for the betting scandal. The Italian midfielder will be a guest of what was his home for three years practically immediately after his farewell, when he left for pastures new in England.

He took to the field 14 months ago in the Champions League match between Milan and Newcastle, a 0-0 draw that came before the storm that led to his ban. He spent a year spent away from the spotlight reflecting on the mistakes made and recovering from a psychological point of view, but now he is back.

Indeed, Tonali returned to playing at the end of August and he did so with the same quality as always but also perhaps with a different mindset. Those who have seen him regularly speak of a mature player who doesn’t seem to have spent a year away from the field.

With the national team, above all, he is making the difference. The paper claims that ‘many at Milan dream of his return’ and while it is not concrete mercato news it is still the story of a feeling and a bond between the fans and a player.

An operation would be very difficult from an economic point of view at the moment for the Rossoneri given what Newcastle paid and the fact they have already been without him for a year. Juventus have shown interest too, but Tonali’s return to Italy is more of a suggestion than a concrete possibility.
