Torino president reveals Belotti was ‘disappointed’ after failed Milan move

After an impressive 2016-17 season, Andrea Belotti attracted the interest of several big clubs, including AC Milan. As revealed by Torino’s president, the striker was disappointed as he wanted to join the Rossoneri.

Belotti found the back of the net 26 times in the league that season and many big clubs started monitoring him closely. However, Torino president Urbano Cairo set a high price tag and the striker remained.

Speaking to Gazzetta Dello Sport, as cited by MilanNews, Cairo confirmed that Milan tried to sign Belotti that summer but only on loan. He also revealed that the player was left disappointed about the fact that he didn’t get his move to the Rossoneri.

“This is how it happened. Belotti exploded in his second season, with Mihajlovic who played him in a front three. He scored 26 goals. I told him: ‘I would put a clause of 100 million for abroad in your new contract. Juventus had just sold Higuain for 90.

“Milan were offering us a loan with a half-obligation to buy. Fassone justified himself with ‘We have already spent a lot’. Yes, but we are talking about a 26-goal striker and, if I had loaned him out without cashing in, how would I have replaced him? Belotti wanted to go to Milan, he was disappointed, he then had a poor season,” he stated.

Milan is Belotti’s boyhood club and many expected the Rossoneri to make a move last summer, when the striker’s contract expired. However, he ended up joining Roma and has scored eight goals in 54 appearances.
