Tuttosport: Fonseca goes ‘all out’ with ‘4-2-4’ formation to beat Inter convincingly

Paulo Fonseca could be in charge of his last game for AC Milan tonight, taking on Inter in the prestigious Derby della Madonnina. While a win would restore confidence, it might not be enough to keep the manager’s job as a report claims.

Several managers have been linked with Milan since the defeat against Liverpool earlier this week. The feeling, as Tuttosport reports (via MilanNews), is that Fonseca already has reached the end of his adventure with the Rossoneri. As such, even a win tonight might not be even to keep the job.

Instead, Milan would have to win convincingly for the management to change their mind on Fonseca, as a solid performance from a tactical and attitude point of view is needed. As happened with Marco Giampaolo, who beat Genoa in his last game, a win will probably not be enough for the Portuguese manager.

Having said all of this, as the newspaper continues, Fonseca appears willing to go all out on his tactics. Instead of hiding in their own half, Milan will face Inter with an attacking spirit by fielding both Tammy Abraham and Alvaro Morata up front in a 4-4-2 formation.

With Christian Pulisic and Rafael Leao on the flanks, the truth is that this will be more like a 4-2-4 formation, not to mention that the full-backs are very attacking-minded too. Fonseca has everything to lose but you wouldn’t be able to guess that based on the formation, so it does seem like more than just a win is needed.

  1. I mean the good thing is that Abraham and Morata move more off ball than the rest of the players but this can really backfire if our wingers don’t help defensively.

  2. Both Morata and Abraham and deep laying strikers… playing a double strikers need one to be in box 18 at all time giving the CB’s troubles while one withdraw to drag the CB’s out of their position

  3. I love the way the philosophy of attack feeds on itself and leaves you with a 4-2-4.

Has anyone watched Inter play? What they will do with all of that midfield space.

This is playing right into their hands.

    1. Exactly. Sit deep, cover wide with a 352 and counter.

Might as well be Quantum Physics because Fonseca is either afraid of it or doesn’t get, or even worse, hasn’t done his homework.

  4. Who watched Liverpool game, he could see 4 2 4 Liverpool defensively.

In moment maignan had long pass, Liverpool 4 attackers were pushing our defence. Only 2 Liverpool midfielder was enough to take ball easily from our players.

Bit question is, are Milan players in that kind of value to do against old Inter players ?

  5. We need more midfields againts a team like Inter, and now we play with less mids? I can easily see our team got run over by another fastly paced transition football.

And for the CB pairing, Fik and Gabbio have been figured out and stripped down by Inter, mostly the first one, so it’s better to start Pavlo. At least he can offer some surprises.

  6. He’s already dancing to the tune of Inter.
Like the last few encounters, Inter will wait then strike on the break whilst we all suffer for 90 minutes.
Sacked Maldini and Masara, missed out on Conte, sold off Kalulu and the list keeps growing….. Mr Cardinale should pack up his bags and piss off back the United State. He will destroy this club like every other American ownership model.

  7. Yeah sure because the answer to winning the midfield battle against a solid central 3 is to put 2 average B2Bs in the middle trying to run up with the ball.

  8. I mean, if you have a death wish, by all means, go balls to the wall and see if you still have them when all is said and done. Better have your suitcase packed too.
