Tuttosport: Inter-Milan derby extends to the bench after Inzaghi and Pioli’s resurgence

By Oliver Fisher -

Thanks to the international break there is almost two weeks to build up the narrative ahead of the first Milan derby of the season, and the papers have wasted no time.

Looking at today’s situation it is hard to believe the criticism Stefano Pioli and Simone Inzaghi received last season, writes today’s edition of the newspaper Tuttosport (via PianetaMilan).

The two coaches have very much been protagonists of the start to the current campaign with Inter and Milan at the top of Serie A thanks to excellent performances.

Admittedly both the blue and red half of the city had some difficult moments last season but both coaches have been able to steady the ship and engineer a resurgence with new tactical ideas, reinvigorating the trust of their respective clubs and owners.

This summer promised to be difficult for both Milan and Inter. The Rossoneri have revolutionised their squad, bringing in 10 new signings, and Pioli has so fan been able blend the new elements well, giving the San Siro crowd a team that plays well and has fun.

Inzaghi on the other hand saw several leaders from the dressing room leave from Handanovic to Onana passing through Brozovic, Skriniar and Dzeko.

Yet, the former Lazio coach preached calm and patience, reconstructing that pragmatic but deadly style seen during the finale of last season. In short, both Pioli and Inzaghi have had their revenge, but now the most complicated test awaits them: the derby.

  1. Inter have had our number for a while now and Inzaghi outcoached Pioli more often than not. So I hope Pioli can get it together for the game coming up.

  2. Probably too soon for Pioli, considering we underwent more personnel changes and some kind of tactic overhaul too. However, the initial 3 matches were good enough so there’s hope. Of course, the game would also show if 4-3-3 with inverted FB is the answer for Simone’s lethal 3-5-2.

Even with certain downgrade from a ball playing keeper in Onana to Sommer, their defensive unit is still solid, being the only team who hasn’t conceded yet. Frattesi is also still being eased in slowly and Thuram seems to work fine with Lautaro, who’s been in lethal form. Hopefully, everyone from both teams would come back healthy from International break and we could be in for a classic game.
