Tuttosport: Milan go for experienced strikers with Camarda in mind – the plan explained

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan’s search for a new centre-forward (or two) this summer is being carried out with Francesco Camarda firmly in mind, according to a report.

After the announcement of Alvaro Morata as a new signing yesterday, Tuttosport (via Radio Rossonera) claim that the management do not seem to want to stop there because they are also negotiating for Niclas Füllkrug.

The German striker has just had his first season with Borussia Dortmund, who he joined after being the Bundesliga’s top scorer with Werder Bremen, and he netted 16 times across all competitions lass season.

Like Morata, Fullkrug is an experienced profile (31 years of age) but behind this strategy there is the intention not to block the pathway for Camarda, so that the staff can promote him to the first team when he is ready.

The idea is to have Morata and Füllkrug for the attack for perhaps a couple of years – while waiting to understand what happens with Luka Jovic – and then Camarda could well be knocking the door down and ready to play senior football.

According to Tuttosport, the choice also comes from the fact that the two could ‘teach a lot and then leave space in the next few years, or months, for Camarda’ who is indicated by the newspaper as ‘not only the number 9 of the future, but also of the present’.

  1. I can see the thinking behind Morata and Füllkrug, I think the management would deserve credit if they pull this off.

We have ball carriers in Leao and Pulisic/Chuck and our plethora of mezzallas, we need a player who can come
    – deep, create space behind him for our attacking midfielders and flying wingers,
    – a player who can hold the ball up for our attacking midfielders and flying wingers
    – a target man, who will finish if and when the opportunity arises
    – a player who wins most duels in the air from a goal scoring and defensive perspective

That is what we get with Morata and Füllkrug, you do not get that ( or to the level that Morata and Füllkrug do it) with Zirkzee or David or Dybouk or Abraham or Sesko (not yet anyway).

I think this was the right way to go rather than being blackmailed by a looser agent, if we had paid the €15m, we would have been a laughing stock so for this strong will and Ibra’s words “we are not a charity”, I personally applaud the management

    1. That’s one way to see it.

One other way would be that Milan is filling a massive hole with a guy that Atletico doesn’t seem too concerned to lose and a Dortmund reject. There were many other strikers in the market, as usual the management decided to go for the cheap options. The German is an upgrade over Jovic so good get. Morata is a disappointment for many fans.

Now the plan is to wait until a kid from the academy that played 3 minutes in Serie A turns the club into a contender. That is the least ambitious plan a top club ever had. As always, winning is boring and the management works overtime to avoid us getting bored.

        1. What you call negativity is just the reality my friend. Even if I wear your rose tinted sunglasses I’ll still see all these Inter flags in Milan and still hear our management saying that we compete for top 4.

      1. “One other way would be that Milan is filling a massive hole with a guy that Atletico doesn’t seem too concerned to lose and a Dortmund reject. ”

Good old “why bother living when we all die anyway?”-Bart spreading his joyful verses again. 🙂

        1. Well man don’t shoot the messenger. I didn’t sign Morata, a guy that never settled at any top club and lost his starting sport with Atletico, that is not so upset at losing him for a whopping 13M. That is the profile of our new Mister X, starting striker and new star player. You’re free to consider that Furlani is an oracle and see what any other club in Europe didn’t see or that he’s a banker here to manage Milan like a widget factory.

    2. I am never in support of shelling out €40m for an unfortunate one season striker who may end up been inconsistent through the next season like what happened with CDK…. I applaud the management for a great tactic thinking and strong will against some opportunity agents and a none career considerant player…. Morata may not guarante 20 goals but great effort upfront.

    3. The problem with this strategy is that is ASSUMES everything with the development of Camarda will go 100% correct and he will defy current history and become a world class ITALIAN Striker – something we haven’t had since Del Piero?? LOL. Let’s pray but recent history does NOT favor Italy producing world class strikers.

That is ALOT to gamble on and the likelihood of it happening is very narrow. It also presumes we do not want any competition for a YOUNG Camrada and that we are already handing him the keys to the most important position on the pitch. Hmmmmm…..does anyone think it wise to add that kid of PRESSURE to 16 year old KID?? I mean it’s not like we haven’t seen this before. The list of so-called NEXT young players that we rushed too soon – only to derail their careers goes on and on.

The prudent and more reasonable approach is to sign a veteran like we did with Morata – AND – a mid 20’s player with experience (for example a Zirkzee, Goerkyes, etc…). Because even if you bought such a player and Camrada develops into what we think he CAN be – you can always sell that mid-20 year old striker – when Camrada is ready WITHOUT placing unneeded and unwanted PRESSURE and ENORMOUS EXPECTATIONS that nobody can live up to

That is proper planning and management of your YOUNG up and coming asset.
The rest is just an excuse not to spend big $$$ on a striker because we don’t want to go over our 20M per player transfer cap. PERIOD

      1. “Camrada develops into what we think he CAN be – you can always sell that mid-20 year old striker – when Camrada is ready WITHOUT placing unneeded and unwanted PRESSURE and ENORMOUS EXPECTATIONS that nobody can live up to”
This part needs to be repeated more often..can’t believe that’s the actual plan we have. Hoping a 16 yr old develop into a WC striker smh

  2. But i dont understand why long contract for Morata. He is 31. 4+1 years mean he would be 35,36. Should be only 3+1.

  3. Makes sense but there’s no resell value or future to build on. Morata adds experience and can act as a mentor but we need a younger profile.

Given PSG are signing Osemieh. With him and Kolo Muani being the starters. Ramos is now surplus. I would love for us to bring him to milan. Perhaps loan with option to buy. He is one of the best young CF in europe. If we can resurrect his career we have 100m+ striker on our hands.

    1. Well said buhh PSG has no intention of loaning out the player and Milan can’t afford to splash 50m on him

  4. Yeaaaah by the time they will wait for Camarda to be ready, he will jump to PSG or other Madrid just like Donnarruma did.

    1. I don’t even know why this guy is being overhyped.
People hyping him like he is Messi.
There is nothing special about him. He might turn into a Haaland which is okay but he is complete fodder talent-wise compared to Milan greats like Shevchenko, Ibrahimovic, Van Basten, Gullit, Kaka etc.

  5. Also he has an ugly face full of pimples.
He doesn’t have a Milan vibe to him.
I get Juve or Inter vibes out of this guy.

  6. No need more a new STC, i think we enough with Alvaro Morata as a starter STC, Luka Jovic as the backup (He was good past season, only need some more playing times). And the 3rd striker is 1 of the Primavera : Lorenzo Colombo, Marco Nasti, or Francesco Camarda (They can swap to play AC Milan Futuro too).

Fullkrug was an option, IF Alvaro Morata’s operation failed. But Alvaro Morata operation was a success.
