Tuttosport: Milan overtake Juventus with energy-conserving win over Empoli

By Ben Dixon -

AC Milan finally overtook Juventus to become second in Serie A due to Sunday’s victory against Empoli. Although, as a report has claimed, it was by no means their most enthralling performance of the season, but a vital one nonetheless.

The past 40 days have been relentless for Milan, with the Rossoneri playing nine times, and with a vital fixture against Slavia Praha still to come, things will not get any easier. Regardless of this, though, Stefano Pioli and his side have managed to steer themselves into second position.

As Tuttosport (via MilanNews) reports, Sunday’s showing was not entertaining or a display of the Diavolo’s best. However, they still managed to earn the three points through another decisive Christian Pulisic goal.

Sunday’s fixture was a massive test, and the players and Pioli overcame it, even if they did not do it most appealingly. The objective was to earn three points with a limited squad due to the suspensions of Rafael Leao and Alessandro Florenzi, which they did. Now, they can reap the rewards of being closer to Champions League qualification and finally sitting in second place, with a performance that the report has titled ‘minimum effort, maximum yield’.

There are other positives from the game, also. Firstly, Noah Okafor showed promise, which shows he is a viable option when the Rossoneri need him. Furthermore, the side kept a second consecutive clean sheet in Serie A, this time with Fikayo Tomori and Malick Thiaw partnering with each other from the start for the first time since the end of November.
