Tuttosport: Two reasons why renewal talks between Milan and Leao have stalled

By Isak Möller -

Rafael Leao has been one of Milan’s best players this season and although it hasn’t been a walk in the park lately, the Rossoneri intend to renew his contract. However, the talks are yet to result in anything.

The Portuguese winger scored the opening goal against Genoa on Friday evening and thus restored some much-needed confidence. He has found the back of the net nine times in the league this season and twelve times overall.

As per Tuttosport (via MilanNews), Milan are working on the renewal of Leao but they are yet to reach an agreement. The current deal will expire in 2024 and there are two reasons behind the renewal stalemate.

First of all, Jorge Mendes is asking for a significant pay rise for his client and while Milan are willing to go quite high, a middle ground has to be found. Furthermore, the potential sale of the club to the Arab fund Investcorp is taking up the main focus of the technical department. Leaving the Leao renewal until after the sale could be the path.

  1. I can’t stand this current generation of players. It’s all about money only these days. Not saying you shouldn’t care at all about it but it’s sad how people justify all actions by money as the guiding compass….

Secondly, it’s a new phenomenon over the past few years that once you have a great half season all of a sudden the players are bold enough to ask for a huge raise… leao has been good for half the season, that’s it.. he has been relatively poor the past few months and he was just bad the past few years yet he already wants a sizeable salary increase?? Pathetic individual but sadly that’s par for the course these days.

  2. If he doesn’t sign by season’s end, SELL HIM THIS SUMMER. We can get 60M out of him on the market.
We can’t keep making the same mistakes.
