Udinese’s appeal over behind-closed-doors game partially upheld – the details

By Oliver Fisher -

There is yet another new chapter in the saga involving Mike Maignan and the racist abuse that he suffered during the match at the Bluenergy Stadium between Udinese and AC Milan.

As Calciomercato.com recalls, the French goalkeeper received monkey chants and racist abuse from some ‘fans’ at the Udinese end and had stopped the match for five minutes before returning to the pitch.

The sanction for Udinese arrived, imposed by the Sporting Judge, in the following days and it determined that they would have to play one home game behind closer doors, i.e. with the total absence of home fans.

The reasoning was that the Judge did not believe just a sector of the Bluenergy Stadium should be punished but the entire stadium, as a deterrent but also recognising the work of Udinese to find culprits.

However, the First Section of the National Sports Court of Appeal – chaired by Carmine Volpe – has in fact partially accepted the appeal from the Friulian club and reassessed the sanction.

They have change it into an obligation to play two matches with the Curva Nord section devoid of spectators. Therefore, there will be no Udinese ultras for the games against Monza (scheduled for February 3) and Cagliari (February 18).

  1. Read well. It wasn’t increased. It’s was reduced.
They were to play in the complete absence of their fans (empty stadium), but with this current consideration, there will be spectators in every other part of the stadium except where their curva nord mounts their banners and all. Just imagine AC Milan match with the curva sud area empty.
