Van Dijk reveals Milan striker is the player he has ‘struggled against the most’

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has named AC Milan’s striker Olivier Giroud as the toughest opponent that he has had to face.

During his career, Van Dijk has played in numerous important matches games for club and country and against virtually all of the current best players in the world.

He spoke in an interview with ‘The Overlap’ podcast and he talked about the striker who gave him the most problems, perhaps surprising everyone with his response which has been relayed by PianetaMilan.

“Giroud is the striker I’ve struggled against the most. I always felt like I had him but somehow he always managed to score against us. Whether it was for Arsenal, Chelsea or France, he always scored,” he said.

“The year we won the Premier League in the 2019-20 season, we beat Chelsea 5-3. We were winning 3-0 and he scored a scrappy goal, and I thought to myself, ‘we’re winning comfortably, but he’s still scoring against me’.”

Giroud has scored 22 goals in 55 appearances with Milan since joining, playing a key role in the Scudetto win last season and constantly emerging as being decisive in the biggest games such as in derbies against Inter and during the title run-in. He contributed to four goals last night in the 4-0 win over RB Salzburg, with two of his own and two assists.
