Vieri believes Milan will ‘play well’ under Fonseca and names ideal striker signing

By Oliver Fisher -

Christian Vieri believes that AC Milan will play good football under Paulo Fonseca, and suggested that the derby against Inter in the fifth round of the new season could be decisive.

Milan are officially ready to enter the Fonseca era after he was appointed to replace Stefano Pioli last week, and there is great curiosity around the former Lille coach can do with a young and talented squad.

There is some obvious work for Fonseca to do such as fixing a leaky defence and trying to ensure the goals keep flowing at the other end if Milan are to begin closing the gap to Inter, who were runaway league leaders last season.

Bobo Vieri is convinced that the Portuguese will do good things. He was present at the launch event for the 2024-25 Serie A calendar and was asked for his thoughts on the Rossoneri’s appointment.

“Fonseca is a great coach, now the fans are waiting for the big move, but the Portuguese will make the team play well, as he has always done,” he said (via Radio Rossonera).

“Whoever loses on the fifth day [in the derby] will already be overwhelmed by controversy. The derby is beautiful after a month, San Siro will be sold out and I will be there.

“There will be a great show between two teams that will be very strong. Playing at San Siro is the dream of all players, it is the most beautiful stadium in Italy, one of the most beautiful in the world.

Vieri was also interviewed by SportMediaset and he was asked whether he believes Joshua Zirkzee or Romelu Lukaku would be a better addition for Milan.

“I wouldn’t sign the Lukaku we saw at Roma and these European Championships. At most I’d take the Lukaku from when he was with Conte… not this season’s one. Looking at him, he struggles physically: he’s tall and muscular, he has to carry a lot of weight around.

“The more he trains, the better he is, but I would always take someone like him who has experience and has played in big teams. If he’s well, he’s always worth taking. A good deal? Morata, if he leaves Atletico.”

  1. Lukaku couldve scored a couple with that Spain team all over its opponents. And just having to be there without scoring, Lukaku is much more troublesome for defenders than Morata. I believe Lukaku has more 3 years guarantees than any of the striker targets. But 40m is too much for him and he’d have to earn less salary.

    1. Not a Bad signing sir! We need Top striker that can score Goals when We already believe GAME OVER. When last did we scored with Corner kicks,Square play. We need someone that will not allow Defenders to Rest. Morata with Jovic or Morata with Okafor.

    2. with Morata you know what you get; he is known quantity. I wouldnt say he’s far from what we got from Giroud. Dont think it is a step backwards, but it aint forward either.
