Watch: Gabbia produces two perfect sliding challenges to deny Udinese

By Oliver Fisher -

Matteo Gabbia was in fine for during the victory against Udinese on Saturday night, making two last-ditch interventions to deny the home side.

Gabbia earned a score of 7.5 out of 10 in our player ratings plus the title of Man of the Match, with the following assessment: “Throughout the 90 minutes, he was by far the best Milan player on the pitch with several interceptions and strong play in the duels.

“One sequence comes to mind, when he had to stretch all that he could to clear the ball, preventing an open-goal chance for Udinese. And that was only one of many good interventions.”

The first of the two challenges he made was a fantastically time last-man slide to prevent Ebosele going through on goal, while the second cut out a low cross that Lucca looked destined to get on the end of.

  1. The second tackle was so beautiful. Very Nesta-like, reminds me of Nesta’s tackle on Roy Makaay way back in the day. The first was dangerous in terms of getting carded but it was timed perfectly. The second one was clean and was a tackle-pass as well. Ended up denying two attackers clear on through on goal and provided no follow ups. Loved it 😍

  2. I hope Gabbia stays next year. He is a quality defender and a really nice guy. Gabbia should take Kjaers spot for sure. Kjaer was a solid strong defender but he’s lost more than a few steps pace now. It’s time.

But ……. who knows what madness will happen next year with moneyball Moncada in charge of transfers. It’s all about spinning that wheel for profit.

    1. Profit for who!

If we sell him for 5m and buy someone else for 10m the only people profiting our agents and offshore bank accounts.

  3. We Are so lucky with the amount of injuries we had this season we Are on a solid 3rd spot and still close to wnd and 1. Things could have gone completly wrong. If we can pull it of with gabbia and kjaer until tomori- kalulu-thiaw Are back, maaaan we need to be greatful.

  4. juve just got Djalo (ex-primavera) but here they try to get chelsea’s injury prone bench warmer (hope isn’t true) while Gabbia Simic Bertesaghi can’t be worse than chalobah

  5. Its crazy how much hate Gabbia got just because he wasn’t some big signing. Yet he’s never been bad, rarely got the chance to play with any consistency, and always is ready when called. I’m glad people see he can actually be an excellent defender. It’s just sad he has to put in a top class shift just for people to not give him hate. I hope the narrative around him ends here and he’s allowed to grow now and develop.

  6. I’ve always stood behind Gabbia because I followed him from his Primavera days and he was always a quality defender. Whenever he got chance he performed well. He’s the real heir to Kjaer and while he may not be fast (this video debunks it anyway) he has really good positioning and is really strong and intelligent defender.

I just hope he won’t be put to bench immediately once our “ready for resale and capital gains exhibit” players Thiaw and Kalulu return. It’s only fair they, like anyone who’s coming back from inujury, work their way back into starting eleven.
