Watch: Replay shows referee and VAR were right to allow Pulisic’s winner for Milan

By Isak Möller -

Christian Pulisic scored the winner for AC Milan in the game against Genoa with a lovely left-footed strike. There was a suspected handball, but a video shows that the referee and VAR were right to allow the goal.

The American winger first received the ball and then turned, before firing the ball into the back of the net. Just before his strike, there was a possible handball and a VAR check was carried out for several minutes after the goal.

However, as shown in the video below, all of the images available to VAR were inconclusive. It’s tough to tell if it really did hit his arm, or if it hit the chest (and if it hit his arm, where?). Therefore, VAR’s decision to rely on the referee’s initial assessment was correct.

  1. Yes, the goal was legitimate; there’s been also a rule change requiring the ball to be below the armpit – the entire ball – for a handball to be called. Great goal. Golazo.

    1. One more thing:

The goal can only be disallowed if the goal is scored by arm/hand or scored immediately after touching arm/hand. In this case, after touching the dubious part, the ball touch the chest before being kicked. The touch at the chest make it not immediate.

  2. This video refute the claim that the ball is pinned by Pulisic’s arm and chest.

This video also refute the claim that the ball was brought down by arm.

The video shows that the ball hit the dubious part then deflected to his chest before going down.

  3. People who keeps saying it’s a handball either they didn’t bother to rewatch the video or they’re Inter (and Genoa) fans.

  4. Unpopular opinion but I hate to say this, there is another angle which I hoping they didn’t show when VAR was showing replays to the refs. Thankfully they didn’t and it showed the ball directly in contact with the upper bicep. It was a direct front on camera view. The goal should not have stood. But I guess the ref failed to not let play on when Leao and Puli were through in goal ..so I guess it worked out

    1. The front camera view cannot show the angle (both the arm and the direction of the ball) which is important to determine which part of the ball touch which part of the arm (green zone or red zone). For example, ball moving horizontally toward vertical arm would hit in the 90 degree or 270 degree side of the ball while ball moving diagonally upward toward diagonal arm (perpendicular the the direction of the ball) would hit in the 45 degree or 315 degree side of the ball. (Nb: 0 degree = upper part of the ball).

      1. No, there was an angle which showed it hitting the upper arm (they showed it once but never again lol 😆 thank goodness haha). I’ll see if I can time stamp it for you. Even if it’s body (chest) on to arm then goal it still has to be called off because the hand comes into play.
