AC Milan take on Atalanta at the Gewiss Stadium tomorrow night, and it is the home side who are looking for a win to continue their Scudetto charge.
As La Gazzetta dello Sport write, Atalanta faced Roma on Monday night and a 15-point advantage over them became 18. Tomorrow they welcome Lombardy rivals Milan who are nine points below Gian Piero Gasperini’s side, with a game in hand.
The report speaks of ‘the world turned upside down’ at least when it comes to Atalanta in Serie A. The team from Bergamo have played in the Champions League as much as Milan since Gasperini’s arrival (2016-17), with four participations each.
In terms of titles, the difference is minimal: one Scudetto and one Supercoppa Italiana for Milan; one Europa League for Atalanta. Atalanta have never won a league title, but the Rossoneri have never won the second European trophy.
If we look at today, Atalanta are ahead of Milan both in the league (2nd versus 7th) and in the Champions League standings (5th versus 16th). La Dea have a project that is producing results both in a sporting and economic sense: they spent over €90m in the summer, but still made a profit.
The common thread of these roaring years for Atalanta is the coach. Gasperini will not emulate Alex Ferguson by remaining at the helm for 27 years as the Scot did at Manchester United, but continuity makes it possible to build what they have.
Tomorrow’s match is unbalanced both in the numbers of the two sides and in the way that play. If the Nerazzurri have fluid game mechanics and an aggressive, entertaining style, Fonseca’s Rossoneri are still riding out the turbulence after some early-season disappointments.
How Milan fare against a complete and in-form Atalanta team will tell us a lot about Fonseca’s work in progress. La Dea will play to overtake Napoli and sit alone in first place, waiting for the league leaders to face Lazio on Sunday. The Diavolo hope to re-establish supremacy in the region.
I don’t see this game as a test but more of an must-win game. Fonseca’s Milan has already been tested against Liverpool, Inter, Leverkusen and Real Madrid with different results, so it’s not like we’ll be facing a huge challenge for the first time.
A win will solidify our position and put us closer to the fourth place and highlight what we have already done against Real Madrid and Inter while a loss will jeopardize our entire season since we might find ourselves 9 points from fourth place with a game in hand.
We never won against Atalanta in last three matches especially when Charlie De Cat joined Atalanta.
And we never won against inter in the last 6 games prior to Fonseca, didn’t even get a draw.
You’re damn right,😅 Fonseca is an unexpected coach sometimes when facing strong team.
Do you think top 3 season’s over
Milan will beat them
If Fonseca win this match, then we are back in fight for high places.. he knows how to play against stronger teams, it will be interesting match.
We will win …I believe we have finally turned a turning point and found our balance as a team … we won’t lose anyway draw at least… forza milan!!
Bruh; I’ll say the same thing I said when they banned us from the Europa League (by consent) in 2019…keep that sh*t good Sirs. We have the Pedigree of seven UCL Trophies to care about tier 2 accolades. No Milanista loses sleep over never having won the Europa League..lol!
Amen
“In terms of titles the difference is minimal ”
Yes, a European title for midtable clubs is equivalent to a championship in the second strongest league in Europe.
Milan never won the Europa-nothing league because it’s a contest for midtable clubs, which is something that traditionally we are not.
Also counting the supper coppa title is even more ridiculous
Bottom line is, they are in form with a continuous project and we are not. So depends which Milan shows up.
The one that faced Cagliari will get smoked.
The one that played Madrid can win.
