GdS: ‘Max is thinking’ – why Pobega and Saelemaekers could be used as full-backs

Next season, AC Milan could try a bit of a wildcard pairing at full-back. Of course, it is not set in stone, but Massimiliano Allegri is ‘thinking’.

There is less than a week until Milan depart for their pre season tour of Asia and Australia. Before then, the desire is to complete the team a little more, by adding at least one full-back. However, there is no denying that time is running out to do so.

At present, he only has two ‘proper’ options, as Gazzetta dello Sport (as seen below) writes. So, he is forced to build around the squad, and the only ideas he has are Alexis Saelemaekers and Tommaso Pobega.

There are no doubts that recruitments will be made, but until then, he may as well try a few things.

Saelemaekers and Pobega retreat

Of course, Allegri has reimagined players before, and this should be no diffferent. With Saelemaekers, it is an easy idea. After all, he was the wing-back for Roma towards the end of the season. Though he was not as defensive as a full-back, he showed signs that he could mould into that role.

With Pobega, it is not as easy. During the World Cup break in 2022, the Italian was used as a full-back and with him being left-footed, it is an easy idea to use, really. He performed well at the Dubai tournament, though it will not imaginably be a long-term thing.

Mercato help needed

Innovations are fine and well, but Allegri expects additions to arrive this summer. Especially as Theo Hernandez has left, whilst there are no true right-backs from the previous season – excluding Alex Jimenez, who debatably is more of a wing-back.

Guela Doue and Marc Pubill are the main options for the right hand side, whilst Max likes Andrea Cambiaso and Destiny Udogie for the opposite flank; both are seen as unattainable, though, as the report states.

As a result, the road could lead to Miguel Gutierrez. We shall have to see but for now, the idea of innovation is needed until proper options arrive.

    1. I think sometimes we overlook and underestimate Pobega, he could flourish under the right coach, as McTomminy has under Conte and Gattuso with Don Carlo, Pobega is a very deter player and can make those lTe runs into the box, as a full back no, but in a double pivot he could surprise a lot of us

      1. This is an absurd comment. Pobega is nowhere near the level of McTominay and never could be. He is the slowest professional athlete I’ve ever seen. The idea of playing him at FB has got to be a joke.

    1. yup. Some of the player can indeed contribute. Pobega is a limited player, if he is to contribute, we should put him in his BEST position. (whatever that is) . Putting him on something this wild, just makes things worse.
Anyway, too many midfielders but not enough DMs, Too many “wing” players, not enough CFs, too many RBs (none good tho) and yet not a single LB. Yup, no vision building the team.

  1. Worst scenario. We have pavlovic and bartesaghi on the left and saelemakers and Jimenez on the right. Just need another CB to buy then for cover or upgrade. Not sure about pavlovic crossing the ball but ticks all the other boxes as a lb/lwb

  2. There is (obviously) no source for this, just a GdS journalist who had a fever dream he could see into Allegri’s mind 😂

We’ve got big, RedBird shaped problems, but if you’re going to get triggered every time this website aggregates guff you’re in for a long summer, lads.

  3. Pobega should stay, he is not worse than Loftus Cheek, and is helpful with registration as he is Milan’s pupil.

But idea with him being fullback is wild

  4. Management on a full profit this year…
Sold Tijani and Theo, *MAX*imize the existing squad. Not surprise if Maignan, Leao and Pulisic will be sold also. Then we got a perfect squad

    Sportiello
Musah (RB) – Thiaw – Tomori – Pobega
    Ricci – Foffana
    RLC
    Chucku – Colombo – Okafor

We are all set for the season.. 🥇🥇🥇

  5. Let’s go back to simple rule of football.
Who will play as wingers and fullbacks?
    Someone who runs faster.
    Is Pobega fast? Helllll nah!

Imagine he is playing against Thuram, how he will stop him?

We survived with Saladmaker, so it’s okay let’s say… But without LB???

  6. Anyone who choses Slowbega as LB over Bartesaghi is completely mad. It makes much more sense playing Musah as RB then Pobega as LB….

Pubill have a 15 mil release clause and Cordona is available for 20 mil. There isnt a total lack of good fullbacks available out there for a decent prize. Its Milan making the same dumb misstakes summer after summer: chasing the ones that arent interested in coming, or with a totally different valuation to what their clubs have.

  7. Brain dead reporting. Bartesaghi and Terra would play left side far better than a slow midfielder. Pull your wallet out and buy a damm LB… you’ve made 100mil from transfers already and only signed a free agent and Ricci for 25. 75mil is more than enough to get a decent LB and RB to start the season. Then the big issue comes from the fact you let our only backup Striker leave, so now teams will charge a premium for guys like Lucca because they knew were desperate to sign 1

  8. I don’t think there is much to this story. But there is no way Milan will thrive with Bartesaghi at LB. I’m sure a decent LB will arrive. It is still early in the window.
