MN: Why ‘sparrowhawk’ Giroud is crucial to Milan even in the non-possession phase

By Oliver Fisher -

Olivier Giroud has come under fire at various points during his time at AC Milan for perhaps not being the most dynamic of centre-forwards or for not being a 20+ goal scorer, but his contribution is a vital one.

MilanNews recall that Giroud has been working overtime this season due to Divock Origi’s difficulties and Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s nine-month absence, and while the Frenchman has scored a number of important goals his other work must also be highlighted.

The two games against Tottenham showcased Malick Thiaw and a defensive unit in great form, but the defensive phase requires everyone’s involvement, starting with the forwards. It is here that Giroud shows himself as he is paradoxically one of the defensive leaders in the non-possession phase given his work rate in pressing and cutting out passing lanes.

The report also recalls how Giroud was known as a ‘sparrowhawk’ during his time at Montpellier because was not just a penalty area striker. He dragged them to the title and won trophies with Arsenal and Chelsea with his goals but also his key passes, his movement, his running and his tactical involvement.

Giroud was the starting centre-forward at the 2018 World Cup as France won the trophy and not only did he not score but he didn’t even shoot on target once. The way he participates in manoeuvring, building and finishing makes it obvious why Pioli continues to rely heavily on the 36-year-old.
