GdS: Why Thiaw is expected to start over Gabbia against Udinese

Rafael Leao’s exclusion from AC Milan’s starting line-up for tonight’s game against Udinese is not the only change expected from Paulo Fonseca, according to a report.

According to what is being reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport (via MilanNews), there are some alterations in defence expected compared to the last few games, with the first one being obvious. Theo Hernandez is suspended for the next two league games, so Filippo Terracciano will take his spot.

The more unexpected news is that Matteo Gabbia – fresh from his call-up to the Italian national team – is not 100% and therefore should not start from the first minute. Malick Thiaw is favoured over Strahinja Pavlovic to pair up with Fikayo Tomori.

On the right side of the defence it will once again be Emerson Royal that gets the nod given that Davide Calabria still out due to injury. As we wrote about in a feature earlier this week, the constant chopping and changing of the rearguard – forced or not – cannot be helping build cohension.

Thiaw has only started one game this season and that was against Torino in the opening round of the season, a 2-2 draw. He has had a physical problem since, but after recovering it was made clear that he was bottom of the hierarchies, yet tonight would give him a new chance.

  1. OH GOD! Can’t we even just enjoy a game against Udinese??
Now I’m gonna watch Thaiw all game worrying he is not going to give the game to Udineses

    1. Pavlovic is worse than Thiaw. You just didn’t see him play enough yet. Thiaw was the new Rudiger for the first 20 games. Just wait, Pavlovic is way more clumsy than him.

  2. I’v missed the games I could actually enjoy without worrying that most wingers are faster than Royal, Terracciano’s penalties, Thaiw’s horrible mistakes, Pavlovich not fit and Tomori unstable.

I cant be calm even if we lead 3-0

  3. Basically our lineup is Good but I need Gabbia and Pavlovic but as for thiaw and tomori let’s sell them and get their replacement as well by January

  4. At best in this game I only see a draw ,fonseca is going to sink milan ,he has too many issues to early in the season ,not in terms with some of the players and some management staff ,I see a sack coming up soon ,under this coach we can only end up playing Europa league next season

  5. thiaw is in such a complicated situation.. remember how he was in good form under pioli and even got his callup to his national team.. I want to give him a chance to prove his qualities, but with current delicate milan situation is kinda hard.. if he plays good then it paid off, but if he plays bad I see that many of milan fans will blame him again..
