El Nacional: Xavi in ‘advanced talks’ with Milan as Fonseca’s position weakens

A report from Spain has claimed that Xavi Hernandez is in advanced talks over taking the head coach job at AC Milan, replacing Paulo Fonseca.

Conflicting news has come out regarding Fonseca’s future in recent days with some sources suggesting a bad result against Verona on Friday could see him sacked, but others believe he is safe for a while yet.

According to El Nacional (via MilanNews) – which is a Catalan-based source – Xavi Hernández seems to be close to returning to the dugout as he is in advanced negotiations with Milan. The Spaniard is currently without a team after being fired by Barcelona at the end of last season.

Xavi would get the chance to work with Rafael Leao, who was reportedly a transfer target when he was with Barca showing that he has an appreciation for the Portuguese winger.

At the moment the rumour seems rather far-fetched, but it is clear that Fonseca must begin to show that he has a grip on the situation both in relation to results and squad management.

Xavi was the manager of Al-Sadd in Qatar from July 2019 to November 2021, and then he became Barcelona boss until June 2024. He took charge of 143 games, with 91 wins, 23 draws, 29 losses, 280 goals scored and 158 against, winning LaLiga and the Supercopa.

  1. I think Xavi could be a good coach for my only concern with Xavi is the level of training intensity. There were rumours it was lacking when he coached Barca. He likes to promote youth and he is not a yes man which is something else I like. The question is can he be successful in Italy?

  2. Only Italian coaches bar Svennis and Mourinho has won the Serie A since the 90’s. This management needs to recalibrate their algorithm and hire coaches that know real tactics. Enough with the frauds!

  3. We don’t need “tactics” right now. We need a manager that will get these prima donnas to run and get results. I couldn’t care less if we won every game from now until the end of the season 1-0 parking the bus. People don’t seem to understand how bad it will be if we miss out on the CL. We’re in an emergency.

    1. This!
Milan needs a coach that will bring immediate change, not coaches that will need time to settle in in a country where they have never played or coached or Sarri, who is almost 70 and needs a year to implement his style of play.
A proven coach who brings a certain level of guarantees in both serie A and UCL is needed. The time for experimenting was in the summer.

  4. I prefer Xavi then Fonseca 100%. But the issue is not just the coach but the prima donna of players that we have. And management needs to communicate more and not hide when the things are not right. Explain Cardinale what is your plan for the stadium explain where are we so fer from your targets!!!! You said that Milan will be again top in Europe. We are not even with the top of Italy imagine if we can play to win the champions League!!!

  5. Not the worst choise, he is a new promising coach. Might not work tho, its always a risk with young new young coaches. I would have preffered De Zerbi. He is Milan fan, more proven, and knows Italian football.

  6. This is why I don’t even trust them if they fired Fonseca. They could replace him with worse lol (not saying Xavi is worse btw, just the names of some of the coaches we’re linked with)

    1. Idk if Conte were hired Theo would be gone, maybe Leao too. If Sarri were boss there’d probably be more tension in the locker room by now. Sarri wants work rate and isn’t afraid to blast his players (remember his time at Lazio). I think these attitude issues were inevitable due to the lack of discipline during the Pioli era. Any proper coach would have had to lay down some law to get everyone pulling in the same direction. Maybe that’s why Fonseca is being given a long leash, maybe management knew the squad was toxic and lacked character. I saw these same poor attitudes and lack of effort all last season but Milan were a bit more lucky in terms of there not being much competition for cl places so the weaknesses weren’t as catastrophic
