GdS: ‘Second thoughts’ possible as Milan have Lopetegui alternatives in mind

By Isak Möller -

Julen Lopetegui has been heavily linked with a move to AC Milan in recent weeks. However, as the fans have expressed their discontent with the news, the Rossoneri could turn to a couple of alternatives instead.

Although moments of great success have occurred in his career, such as the run with Spain’s natural team and the Europa League title with Sevilla, Lopetegui’s resume is not overly convincing. Therefore, the fans have made their voices heard recently.

As reported by today’s edition of Gazzetta dello Sport (see photo below), a contract is ready for Lopetegui to sign at Milan, worth €4m per year on a three-year basis. The Rossoneri have got along very well with the manager but would like to take their time, with the next two weeks decisive.

There should be a meeting very soon to understand how quickly and agreement could be reached, but the Spanish manager has seemingly given priority to Milan. Should the latter have second thoughts, which is possible, they could turn to someone like Roberto De Zerbi or Paulo Fonseca.

Gianluca Di Marzio has also stated that Milan are sensitive to fan criticism, with above all the Curva Sud statement weighing heavily. Therefore, it’s possible that they could opt against Lopetegui.

  1. I don’t think Fonseca will be better accepted by the fans.. By that statement they didn’t mean we don’t want Lopeteguie but that we want a winner – Fonseca not even in that category

    1. Some statistics to back me up; Roma
      Win % – 51 ; Lille % – 52 ; Porto % -56 ; Pacos de Ferreira – 35%; Braga – 50%. Fired from every team he coached within year – year and a half. TRUE WINNER!!

    2. I prefer fonsy of the two because he has worked in Italy before and he does use young players and his teams usually want to play attacking football.. of all the names so far he seems the best pick. But the names are nothing to write home about anyway

      1. Well yes Fonesca is like Pioli and Lopetegui – misunderstood genious. You know what ? We wouldn’t have this conversation if CARDINALE just said – we won’t be competing for anything but top4 for the next 4 years . Basta done – we know we will be developing players , selling them to the highest bidder , make the money for the stadium ourselves and sleep tight. No this BOSS man goes on how he wants to take Milan back to the top , win trophies etc etc. Everyone here should be honest with themselves – are these coaches really the ones to do it? Are clubs like United , Barca , Real , City, Athletico, Bayern ( and I know we are not on their level but listening to our owners that’s what we aim for) ever gonna consider this names for their bench?

        1. well united went tih Hagy who seemed like a good pick and is now floping. Barca went with xavi who only worked in goat land before that.. Bayern hired the overrated tuchel whom they wanted to fire after less than half a year. real did hire lopetegui once.

i mean even if we do get a motta or de zerbi its still 50-50. they can flop just as easily as anyone else at the end of the day.. thats football.

How long was arsenal patient with arteta before they really took of? 2-3 years. Will Milan give 2-3 years to the next coach, whoever will it be?

          1. The difference is that Motta or De Zerbi provide the fans with some hope, both MIGHT be the next big coach. With the likes of Lopetegui we just know what we are getting.

          2. fans are stupid. we will turn on motta or de zerbi if there are poor results a fast as we will turn on lopetegui or fonseca. and there will always be poor results, no one can win all

  2. Another evidence of lack of vision. Erratic mercato leads to poorly built team. Then Pioli out because fans are not happy. Then they found some random guy. Now they’re looking for someone else. They only want the fans to continue to buy tickets and 200€ jerseys. Lost, lost, lost. Please build your stadium and go back to NY Yankees and XFL.

  3. What’s sad is that being one of if not the greatest club in history (Madrid winning most of their CL titles when TV was black and white and it was them and half a dozen provincial teams In it 😊) not once have we been linked to a ‘best in class manager’…..Zidane, Tuchel, Klopp. It’s clear that Cardinale won’t go fishing in this pond.

Conte is rumoured, but is that just click bait? Gallardo excites as does De Zerbi to a point, but the latter two are no guarantee of success, and that is what we want!! Best in class

    1. Funny how every one is talking about class like klopp or zidane.zidane won’t even be anything if Madrid didn’t give him a chance.we got abate who is doing well with d primavera, why not try him?why going for coaches who will earn a lot then flop and turn another problem

      1. Yes, there are times when Zidane types happen…but now he is something and he’s available.

I’m not totally against Abate either depending on other options

  4. Tuchel just got fired by both Chelsea and Bayern Munich.

Klopp is taking a year off.

Zidane is not interested in Milan.

It’s not as if Milan can just decide who they want. They cannot force anyone to become the new manager.

From what I have gathered from a lot of comments, people wants a manager who has won trophies, plays offensive football, has had success in most if not all of the clubs he has managed and who has managed top clubs.

How many managers who fulfill these criterias are available and willing to manage a club like Milan’s?

    1. Tuchel is still a great coach, Pep got fired by Bayern, they are very picky about a lot of criteria…

Then put a plan in place for Klopp for 2025 and keep Pioli for a season…tell the fans in a statement like when Bayern secure Pep

Who says Zidane isn’t interested? You? Have you
      Got him on speed dial?

    2. Clubs like Milan? Who old are you mate? Milan are an elite legacy club. There is nobody better. Just like Liverpool were before Klopp dragged them back to glory

  5. The fact that Fonseca knows Italy doesn’t count for anything. In that case we might just as well go for Sarri…I can’t remember Fonseca doing anything in his career…at least we know how Sarri plays… we need a coach with clear ideas.
