Santiago Gimenez guided AC Milan to victory against Hellas Verona on Saturday evening, finding the back of the net with an easy header. While there are positives to take from the game, the Rossoneri also could have done a lot better.
It took Sergio Conceicao’s men 75 minutes to find a way through against the league’s worst defence. Gimenez bagged his second goal for the club, and his second consecutive in the league, certainly showing why Milan paid good money for him.
Below are five things we learned from the game…
1. Still struggling against low blocks
It has been evident all season long, even under Paulo Fonseca’s guidance: Milan really don’t like playing against sides that sit back and defend. In fairness, not many teams do and even the best in the world can be held to draw, or narrowly snatch wins.
The problem with Milan, however, is they haven’t identified the right solutions to give it a proper go. Or at the very least, even when they find ways through low-sitting defences, they don’t use those solutions anywhere near enough.
Malick Thiaw had some really good vertical passes last night which completely opened up Verona’s defence, but no other player dared to hit these. Matteo Gabbia should have tried more, the same goes for Youssouf Fofana.
Then, of course, we also need to see a lot more movement from all of the players. Milan were far too static at times against the Bentegodi side and didn’t have any pace to their game. We all know that to break down a low-sitting defence, fast passes and surprises are needed.
2. Gimenez knows where the goal is
Milan signed Gimenez to score goals and so far, he has delivered on that front with two goals in two league games. It was an easy tap-in last night to seal the win but at the same time, he was in the right place at the right time. None of the ‘drop down to help the midfield’ nonsense.

He also had a goal that was disallowed for offside, but it was another moment that showcased just how clinical he is when given the chance. Milan need to understand his abilities better and actually try to put him in good chances.
It was really only on that offside goal and the winner that the Rossoneri played to his strengths, which are attacking the depth and freeing himself inside the box. More vertical passes in behind the defence are thus needed, as well as crosses into the box.
3. Pre-match tactics must improve
Once again, as has become a theme under Conceicao, Milan were very poor in the first half and lacked any sort of enthusiasm. Things changed for the better in the second half, especially thanks to the entrance of Alex Jimenez and Rafael Leao, but the Rossoneri simply cannot afford not to turn up in the first half.
Conceicao clearly has some work to do here as the negative trend is becoming a pattern. It’s also linked to whether he will actually field the ‘Fantastic Four’ from the first minute consistently, as that would certainly guarantee attacking firepower.
Balance is everything, though, and Milan are yet to find theirs along with a proper identity. Everything will become so much easier once that is in place, as you won’t have to make changes every interval to adapt to the opponent (the opponent should be adapting to a team like Milan!).
4. Quality off the bench
As much as we can question Conceicao’s abilities from the first minute, we must praise his eye for substitutions. Many were a bit surprised to see Jimenez replacing Kyle Walker last night but the Portuguese manager was certainly proven right on that one.

Christian Pulisic also came off the bench, along with Leao, and that is saying something given the starting eleven actually wasn’t too bad. The January window has helped a lot and hopefully the addition of Warren Bondo will further strengthen the squad, as will Ruben Loftus-Cheek when he’s back in action.
Of course, there are still some doubts that the management will need to fix in the summer to avoid another season of ups and downs. The lack of a left-back deputy is one, a proper No.6 is another, so there is some work to do.
5. Maignan’s questionable form continues
Unfortunately, following the howler against Feyenoord, it was yet another questionable evening for the goalkeeper. He fumbled a few ‘easy’ balls and was far from brilliant in his communication, which we aren’t used to seeing from him at all.
It’s clear that he’s more prone to mistakes now than when he arrived at Milan, which is far from ideal. Perhaps getting the contract renewal in place – expected to be signed in the coming weeks – will ease his mind as the recent mistakes clearly have nothing to do with quality.
We all know what Maignan is capable of on his day and it’s just a matter of regaining confidence, even if that is easier said than done.
This would be a great weekend for Milan, result wise, if Inter can get at least a draw vs Juventus. A win will be even better. Inter is winning the scudetto anyways.
As usual, Inter are useless.
Even prior to this result I was guessing that Napoli would win the scudetto.
Particularly if Inter win their UCL R16. Which they should really.
Conte managing just 1 game per week is a big advantage.
Inter would be playing either Juventus or Milan in the r16 of the UCL unless one or both of them sh!t the bed midweek.
So far this season, in 5 games vs Milan and Juventus, inter has 3 losses and 2 draws.
Outside of manhandling Atalanta, inter has had hard time beating good teams this season. They might easily play 1 game a week as well. Plus Napoli hasn’t taken advantage of only playing once a week so far and are not really a good teammate anyway.
On paper Inter should beat anyone of Milan, Juventus, Feyenoord or PSV in their next UCL. But your right they have failed to win many of their big matches this year. Had they done so they would be coasting to the title.
They are not as solid as last season. Their best players are over worked from club and international football. IMO.
At this rate I’d rather we faced Inter than Arsenal.
Honestly, considering Kolo Muani’s form with Juventus and how they now thanks to him seem to start scoring in bunches, I don’t see how we can bypass them anyways.
I think the race for 4th place is effectively over unless Atalana (or Juve) somehow collapse badly.
Not only Kolo Muani, but Renato Veiga too is promising in defense. I think that the most likely scenario is that Italy gets only 4 UCL spots, and those go to Napoli, Inter, Atalanta and Juve. I think Milan will end up fifth or sixth, if Lazio keep the current point advantage.
Lautaro was garbage and should have put the game out of reach early on.
It is not the first time he does that. It is Inter’s habit to miss tap-ins.
it is still too early dude. We got a game in hand. Juve has indeed improved but they are as inconsistent as we are. Lazio is actually doing what its supposed to (beating smaller teams, ties in big matches) But i feel as it happens every year, they will have a small dip in form.
Unless Serie A shts its pants, we are getting the extra UCL spot. 5th place should do. There is no room for error but my top 5 should be Napoli-Inter-Atalanta-Juventus-Milan
Inter started to decline near the end of the last season. I am not sure if Inter can get the Scudetto.
They are giving me the same feeling we had when Milan lost the title to Juve. We had Zlatan leading the line but our backline and mid was aging bad and declining.
The curse of Alessio Romagnoli’s armband ?
– Davide Calabria was the vice captain in 2021/22 (although he captained many games). The season where he became the captain is also the season where his performances started to drop.
– Théo Hernandez wore the captain armand starting from the 2022/23 season during which he captained many games. From there on his performances started to drop significantly (although his 2023/24 season was better than the 2022/23 one) to reach the lowest level currently when he was the captain for a while.
– While he never wore it for quite long but Rafael Leão’s performances also started to drop when he was considered and leader (and when he was also gifted the N°10).
– And now we have the current captain, Mike Maignan. He already had many blunders during last season, but this one is on a whole new level. He seems incapable to catch a ball cleanly and costed us the game against Feyenoord Rotterdam, 2 points against Cagliari (along with Fofana) and could have costed the win yesterday and against AS Roma. And you can’t blame the performance drop of a goalkeeper on the coach or on the lack of rotation.
– I’m not saying there is a cause-effect between them elevated to captaincy and their drop in performances and their problems have probably many other root causes and are not exactly similar from player to player, but I found this correlation quite interesting and also sad. The leader or captain of a team is the man you turn to when the situation becomes dire, he is the one who should inspire his teammates and lead by his performance when the game seems already lost. No one can forget what Gerrard did to Liverpool in 2005 and 2006, Maldini’s aura, Puyol throwing himself in front of a shot,…. but our current captain(s) are among the worst performing players right now. Is the armband simply too heavy for any Milan player ?
We don’t have captain calibre players in our team. The one who used to visibly galvanize the team during the game was Romagnoli as you’ve pointed out. Apart from him, I believe Ibra would have been that captain figure. But apart for that we’ve been missing a true captain figure. imo Pulisic is our silent captain. And Walker is a potential captain (has done so for City) and commands respect
I would choose Maignan as a captain, he has the character and ability despite his recent performance.
I’d give Gabbia the armband.
Try Thiaw at 6, as he would do great.
With the chronic shortage of midfield players on the UCL list I have been pondering which of our defenders could do a role in midfield.
Hadn’t considered Thiaw but he does pass well.
He played DM on occasion at Schalke so why not
I am not understanding why a mediocre and loan player Joao Felix starting every match and playing every minute! is it the start of potugeuse tribalism!
You have to give that confidence to PuLisic and leao it’s what they deserve
These days conceicao start to sub pulisic instead of felix! Its must until the end of the match Pulisic and leao to be in the pitch that’s must even if its not their best day
Felix was brilliant last night, and he was our best attacking player (although that’s not saying much) midweek.
It shouldn’t be a surprise the goal came once Leão and Pulisic were both on the pitch. It’s true Pulisic wasn’t directly responsible for the goal but he did carry the ball central to switch the field of play and passed to Álex to start the goal scoring opportunity. João runs around without tactical awareness like he’s in the PL with lots of effort, zero awareness, a Conceição special.
Felix got minutes more and more because we need No 10 but he is tend to play wider on left. And hist best position in on that role. And with this position, Leao could still play.
We dont have real No.10, Tijji is No.8 player, while Pulisic is a inverted winger.
But if Leao got injury, we could play with Felix and Puli as double AMF and Tijji as No.8. It near what Gasperini done with Dani Maldini and CDK.
We haven’t learnt much from last week. This is who we are and we have to accept it. Let’s hope we can grind 3 ugly points each round and hope for the best in the table. At this point there’s no use hoping for beautiful football and all those other wishful things. If it comes great but wouldn’t get my hopes up
As an aside, noy gonna lie that kit was superb!! Definitely going to buy that one.
“As an aside, noy gonna lie that kit was superb!! Definitely going to buy that one.”
Not sure I liked the green touch, but at least it somewhat respect our colors.
But I don’t understand why are we not playing with our regular kit. It’s not like Hellas Verona had colors that can create confusion with ours.
I think it was a special edition kit release. Inspiration for the kit was from African kits/colours and for black history month
Can understand the inclusion of green for what they were trying to represent. But agree with @ACM1899 point. Leave out the green segment and you’ve got a great alternative Milan 4th kit.
The green is regrettable. The rest is on point. This is like a collector item.
I also thought that Kit was cool. The green bottom and yellow touches and print with the black make it super neat.
Only things I learnt were:
– Sottil couldn’t do much with his chance to start
– Ibrahimovic couldn’t find a hair tie.
Well done with you second point.
1. João Felix is like a stripper looks good while performing but leaves you wanting more. Expensive and not worth the money.
2. Our two Portuguese men o’ war are less war more fish.
3. Álex Jimenez is not the one to fu@k with. The boy band hair is deceiving.
4. Mike mistakenly sprayed oil on his gloves instead of his kit. Someone needs to make sure he understands how it’s done.
5. The kit designers forgot this is Milan and we don’t f&cking wear yellow and green at home, what a rubbish outfit.
Mike should probably follow what powerlifters and weightlifters do and chalk his gloves.
A couple seasons ago. We had a green color in our either away or 3rd kit
1. Thought I saw dollar bills in his waste band. If we slip hima $20 do we score?
2. More wooden and obsolete?
3. Read you 5 x 5 on that one.
4. Extra virgin oil probably.
5. Well the company name is Off White so they seemed to have missed all the cues
#6 Leao is one of the worst divers in Europe. It’s pathetic. He needs to man up and fight through contact. If the ref calls a penalty then great, otherwise keep playing.
I don’t think any ref calls penalties for the dives. Getting a yellow for diving is more likely.
Switch goalkeepers to a second string keeper at this point. Torriani or Sportiello might be a better option.
I wish RLC comes back and get to that form of last year.
That match against PSG he was great, I want him to be consistent, he is one of few physical players who can also play CAM in ours team.
It’s not about winning ugly but to at least put in some effort. Every midtable team either Serie A or CL look like a top team playing against us. Our lads play like they haven’t been paid for months now. No motivation, no effort, no tactics, no roles. Just a lot of running and intensity.
I don’t really see any improvements under Sergio. As a matter of fact, even those who performed under Fonzy, now look lost and unmotivated.
We’re in for a long rest of the season.
I’m happy with the three points. I would like to praise Leao first and foremost. He has bailed us out numerous times over the years and deserves better treatment. This talk of selling him is ridiculous at the moment. We don’t necessarily need to build the team around him but he needs to be an integral part of it. Who could Milan realistically get that would be an improvement (same logic for Theo)? Only Lookman comes to mind. Leao is considered inconsistent but compared to whom? Fofana, Musah, Abraham, Morata, Loftus-Cheek, Okafor, Chuk, Felix? People expect more from Leao which is fine but when are they going to demand more from the others?
Anyways, Feyenoord is next. We are more than capable of turning it around.
I think it’s the way Leao acts on the field that people are annoyed about, not his statistics or something. I mean the two minutes sleep in the Feyenoord game, the careless finishing and passing many times, Leao just plays like it’s not important.
“Perhaps getting the contract renewal in place – expected to be signed in the coming weeks”
What are we… In week 37 of the “coming weeks” now? Or are we already past 40? Still plenty of weeks to come though. 🙂
