AC Milan 2-1 Roma: Player Ratings

By Nikita Fesyukov -

Milan managed to prevail in their second match of the season after a fantastic 95th minute goal from substitute Patrick Cutrone. Thus, Gennaro Gattuso’s men have taken their first points of the Serie A campaign.

STARTING XI

Gianluigi Donnarumma (6): Had almost zero work to do throughout the game. Fazio’s goal was from close range and it was very difficult to imagine Donnarumma saving it.

Davide Calabria (6.5): Very solid game defensively from the fullback, however, his crossing was a bit off and he did not manage to cause much trouble to Kolarov on the opposite end of the pitch. But he compensated this with his crucial tackle on Nzonzi which lead to the winning goal.

Mateo Musacchio (7): Looked very good at the back along with the rest of the defense. Calm on the ball, good positioning. A great response after a somewhat disappointing match in Naples.

Alessio Romagnoli (7.5): Great performance from the new captain. Did not let Dzeko or Schick do anything on our half. A performance worthy of a Milan captain.

Ricardo Rodriguez (7.5): And to complete a very good defense, Ricardo Rodriguez was the best out of the four. He supported the team both defensively and offensively and the cherry on top was a fantastic pass to Kessie on the first goal.

Franck Kessie (7.5): As always, the team engine ran up and down and contributed to both phases of the game. Made life very difficult for both Nzonzi and De Rossi with his hunger and pace.

Lucas Biglia (7.5): A calm element of this Milan side. Someone who can hold the ball with ease and make the whole team less nervous. Do not recall misplacing a single pass and also defensively he handled the game amazingly.

Giacomo Bonaventura (7): Solid game from Jack. His dynamism caused Roma’s team problems on numerous occasions and he stood at the birth of the opening goal with a pass to Ricardo Rodriguez who then found Kessie in the box.

Suso (6.5): A constant threat on the right side with his runs and dribbles, but this time the Spaniard’s end product was a bit off, both in terms of crossing as well as shooting. Though it is true that Roma marked him in particular very well.

Gonzalo Higuain (7.5): A performance that only lacked the goal. Gonzalo showed why he is considered one of the best and most complete strikers in the world. Great in the build-up, great movement and the cherry on top was his amazing pass to Cutrone for the game winner.

Hakan Calhanoglu (7): Immense first half from the Turk. He looked like he was everywhere and caused big problems to Roma with his movement all over the pitch. In the second half his performance level dropped, but it is still important to point out that Hakan is a crucial part of Gattuso’s Milan.

SUBSTITUTES

Diego Laxalt (7): The tiny Uruguayan increased the pace level of the Milan team and looked very lively in the dying minutes of the match. His and Castillejo’s activity were one of the reasons why we did not resign on the winning goal.

Samu Castillejo (7): Similar things can be said about the new arrival from Villareal. His pace and hunger was evident in the final minutes and he looked incredibly eager to prove himself.

Patrick Cutrone (8): What more can you ask from a striker coming on for the final minutes of the match? He came on, he fought, he pressed and he scored a goal. Man of the match.

MANAGER

Gennaro Gattuso (7.5): It was evident that Gattuso went for the win from the very start. He wanted to show that the team learned a lesson in Naples and a sent a completely different team mentally compared to the second half last week. In the second half, the performance level dropped slightly, but after the equalizer, the players pushed hard to get these first three points of the season.
