Ancelotti believes decision to sack Maldini shows a ‘lack of respect’ for Milan’s ‘tradition’

By Oliver Fisher -

Carlo Ancelotti fired some strong words at AC Milan’s owners after their decision to sack Paolo Maldini, labelling it ‘disrespectful’ to the club’s history.

The whole Milan world has been rocked by the news that club icon Paolo Maldini has been sacked from his role as sporting director with Ricky Massara following him in what feels like the first real bold move by RedBird Capital since they took over.

We attempted to explore the reasons behind the parting of ways in a feature published yesterday, discussing how disagreements over transfer strategy and perhaps too much honesty in the media seemed to push Cardinale to making a decision that has caused a real stir.

Ancelotti was interviewed by Il Giornale and was asked for his thoughts that his former team-mate and player has been sacked from his role, with his comments relayed by SempreMilan.it.

“I learned in Madrid that the history of a club must always be respected. Here Di Stefano, Amancio, Gento, Puskas are still exclusive values towards which we have reverence,” he said.

“To preserve history at the highest levels, the memory of the past must be protected. What happened with Maldini demonstrates a lack of historical culture, of respect for the Milan tradition. While it is true that history does not make you win it is also true that history teaches you how to win.

“Football clubs who primarily think of doing business ahead of sporting achievements and spirit are destined to fail. Patronage no longer has the meaning of before but profiteering is negative.”

  1. Don Carlo more than anyone understands what it means to honor the tradition of a great club and how that is vital to create an identity that attracts fans and players as well as breeding a winning mentality.
This is not Man City, this is AC Milan!

I’m honestly just crest fallen by this action.
I worry greatly for the club.
    Maldini is Milan
Are they going to sack the fans next

  2. Carlo Ancelotti speaks of a tradition but he is at a club where if you don’t win a single trophy in a season, you get fired as a coach.
In his 1st stint in Madrid he won the UCL in his 1st year, won nothing in the 2nd and got fired.
He is lucky he won copa del Rey this season or he would have been fired again after winning the UCL the previous season.
That club has standards, history and tradition don’t matter much to them. Results matter at a big club

    1. 💯
Tradition doesn’t mean automatic qualification to Champions League POT 1, results DO!!!

Tradition does not mean the best players sign for you or stay with YOU!!

Ancelloti knows all this and is humoring those who fail to understand these FACTS!

  3. Greeting to all the Ac Milan . I total agree with Ancelotti . Its Owen from Africa l respect the works he has delivered .
He is a hard worker even as a player he really worked hard for the Ac Milan .
Please let’s immilate the value and history of the club .
We need continuation as this it’s a project look at the young talent that we have produced in his tenure .
I thank you and hope you will read and reply

    1. A wise man who cared about results and salary and wanted nothing to do with AC And a Wiseman don’t walled away from Everton for mid season, so what does he know about tradition and loyalty

      1. @Malik, you are a special kind of stupid.

Do you know who Carlo Ancelotti is? How many UCL he won with Milan as a player, then as a coach? Ancelotti went on to achieve greater things. At no time did the Elliott management approach him, so where did you get your “wanted nothing to do with Milan” from?

      2. Well, Real Madrid is a club that has their biggest players and former managing staff involved in as many aspects as possible, that is why they have 14 champions leagues. 5 really recent. Also they are not owned or managed by US money hungry geniuses, but by fans. The model that Milan should have followed and in reality all the sports clubs on the planet. You can’t have people like Jerry (or his investors through the fund) own any sports club on the planet. Should be banned by law.

  4. “Football clubs who primarily think of doing business ahead of sporting achievements and spirit are destined to fail.
    Thank you Carlo

  5. History, tradition? You don’t need that; we have Jerry and his US businessman that will make money off the club. The goal is to be a profitable club, but not to win titles, but to make money for investors. Jerry doesn’t have 20% of the money to buy Milan, he is a glorified banker that works with other people’s money. And he isn’t the boss, they are. Whatever investors say, he has to comply to it in the end. That is how that works. I can’t wait to see those big talents incoming now that Moncada will have a bigger say and how Pioli will play those 17 or 18 year old kids in the first team. Yeah, right, it is just damage control by Jerry, and you will see the damage control after results don’t go up. Maldini maybe had bad signings but we wouldn’t sign a few players if he didn’t call them, publicly available information. Now, we have more than a few unhappy players, maybe not because Maldini left but because the club is obviously lacking ambition. Leao or Theo will now be happy with CL qualification and getting free players and kids to compete with City, PSG, Real and others? This whole thing is a joke, but it was expected when Jerry took the club, he did a fake 2nd tier American football league and that is his big experience, and well, they did nothing yet. Oh yeah, and they got Tolouse or whatever that is called into Ligue 1, that is a great model for Milan. Can’t wait.

  6. Hit the nail on the head Carletto. It’s not necessarily the firing it’s how it’s done and like I said before, optics. The business side of me can understand, the Milan fan side of me can’t, not with the history and precedent that Maldini has set.
