Moncada and Reijnders

Bianchin: Moncada smiles as rigorous scouting paid off with Reijnders

Tijjani Reijnders has become a star player for Milan since joining the club in the summer of 2023, showing week in and week out just how important he is. As highlighted by a report, he’s the best signing of the Geoffrey Moncada era.

Against Real Madrid earlier this week, Reijnders scored his fourth goal of the season, as well as his fourth in the last three games. In other words, he’s in the form of his life and Milan are certainly reaping the rewards.

The goalscoring and composure in front of goal were always the missing factors, but now Reijnders seems to have added this to his game. As highlighted by Luca Bianchin of Gazzetta dello Sport, he’s the best signing of the Moncada era as Milan paid just €20m for his services.

Christian Pulisic is a very good shout too, also arriving for around €20m, but he came off a very disappointing season with Chelsea. Reijnders, meanwhile, had done very well for AZ Alkmaar and somehow, Milan managed to win the race.

Youssouf Fofana could also become one of the more prominent Moncada signings, having been very promising so far, and this technical director is delighted with these players. The rigorous scouting, especially of Reijnders, certainly paid off for the club.

  1. It seems its a numbers game buy 10 cheap players and 1 will be good. For every Reijnders there is an Emerson. What sort of scouting was done there?

    1. That’s not how math works…

And no, it’s not 10 bad players, its a couple, 2-3 is flourishing

Fofana, Reijnders, even Musa, who I dont particularly like starting to pay off. So is Morata.

This aint Fifa. You dont put all eggs in one basket, which clearly we aren’t doing at the moment.

  2. O jesus.. scores a few goals and everyone acting like he is the second coming of seedorf.. Tijji is good but not that good. chill

  3. Puli? In the words of he who can’t be named: “You don’t need algorithms to find Pulisic” 🤭

Reijnders? If one just looked at the best player outside of the top 5 leagues prior to when he was bought, he pretty much came out on top for many stats especially passing (which is why Barca wanted him). (However if you added in the top 5 leagues those stats go down quickly). Won’t say it’s a no brainer though but I wouldn’t say he was a total unknown quantity either. And if we’re going the route of acquiring known or close to known quantities then it’s better to get a proper sporting director instead.
I find that the mark of a good scout is one which finds players who no one knows about and puts them in a team where they then become good players kinda like Fabinho, Silva, Lemar….you know..Moncada the Monaco version. Moncada the Milan version hasn’t been able to replicate those sorts of finds and imo that’s been the biggest disappointment so far with him. The ones which were unknown in several ways all flopped (Pellegrino, Romero to an extent re “unknown”, Terra). The rest were known quantities. I think Moncada is trying to be a SD when really he’s only just a scout.

    1. A good scout should discover players in lesser leagues outside of the top 5 in Europe and including South America. See, there are good young promising players in Brazil. For example: Real locked in Endrick with a future contract more than one year before he turned 18 and became eligible for a transfer abroad. There is a right winger currently playing for the Brazilian league leaders and Libertadores finalists Botafogo, and recently he was also called up to Brazil’s national team. His name is Luiz Henrique. I haven’t seen an European club expressing interest yet but it’s probably too late for a bargain now that he is a national team player who actually has scored and assisted in essential WC qualifiers for Brazil; they were (which is rare for them) in trouble in the ongoing WCQ until Luiz Henrique was called up for the first time and was instrumental in the two victories that put Brazil back on track. I’d have loved it if Moncada had spotted him one year before he got famous, like Real did with Endrick. But no… as far as Brazilians go, we got Emerson Royal. From South America we got Pellegrino and Romero and Vasquez or whatever that goalkeeper was called; neither paid off. So that’s less than ideal scouting.

    2. Ikr..
Moncada gets us Fofana who was a staple in ligue A for years and also in the national team and then once he starts playing well for Milan some journalist is gonna come up with a moncada masterstroke article..

Nobody gonna say a word when on the other side he blows 70M on players we don’t even need and are flops more or less
